When the definitive history of Donald Trump’s presidency is written, it’ll likely begin on April 30, 2011, long before he was actually elected.
That’s when Seth Meyers, then the anchor of “Weekend Update” on “Saturday Night Live,” told a joke that, some believe, so infuriated Trump he resolved to run for president.
Speaking at the White House Correspondents' Dinner that night, Meyers acknowledged Trump in the audience, and then said: “Donald Trump has been saying he will run for president as a Republican, which is surprising, since I just assumed he was running as a joke.”
It got a big laugh, but not from Trump, who who sat rigid and stone-faced in the audience, staring daggers at Meyers.

Meyers didn’t write that joke. Comedian Jon Rineman did — and he regrets it. Talking publicly for the first time about the one-liner regarded by some as a pivotal moment in American political history, Rineman thinks he and the country would be better off today if he never scribbled that joke in his notebook. He’s not kidding. Rineman is tormented by the idea that he could be one of the reasons Trump became president.
Was the run for president in 2016 Trump’s revenge? Some think so.
“On that night, Trump’s own sense of public humiliation became so overwhelming that he decided, perhaps at first unconsciously, that he would, somehow, get his own back — perhaps even pursue the presidency after all, no matter how nihilistically or absurdly, and redeem himself,” The New Yorker’s Adam Gopnik, who was seated a few tables from Trump at the dinner, wrote in 2015.

Trump ran because of Romney and Macain. Nobody in their right mind would take that job unless they were profoundly certain they were the only one who could do what needed doing. Notice I said ‘right mind.’ Most politicians are in it to feed their malnourished ego.
It’s not hubris if you can actually do what you say you can. If you know nobody else is up to it, you’re obliged to do it.
I think that’s why Trump ran.

Trump also ran for president in 2000 well before Obama was a senator. Running for president was something Trump had talked about.
Obama claimed his joke caused Trump to run in 2016. Obama tells the story to make him look important and powerful and to make Trump look petty. Obama is a liar and also doesn’t know Trump. Why repeat what Obama said as if true? He says Trump isn’t fit to be president. Do you believe that?

I will tell you a secret. It’s not hard to trigger that arsehole. He interviewed me once and it didn’t take much.
The version I read was slightly different. I read it in Jerome Tuccille’s

My theory is that DJT spoke about this possibility in front of Ivanka, who mentioned it in passing to her then BFF, Chelsea, who mentioned it to her mother, HRC, who saw DJT as strong enough to devour the R competition, but would be easy to beat in 2016 with her DNC+ machinery.
That’s just it - he has had many opportunities to run for public office before and he turned them down.
I don’t think Trump would admit to the joke being the reason he ran.

Quit giving credit to where credit isn’t due. Anyone leading up to Trump’s announcement could say this if they wrote or said a joke or even penned a cartoon of Trump running for President. In the end it was the 0bummer on stage making fun of Trump that put Trump over the edge and the use of the IRS as a weapon.
They were so cruel and bullying to trump that night. I hated Seth Meyers after that.
Soy Boy thinks too high of himself. It was the piss poor job Obama and Biden did. Obama and Biden weaponized the Deep State against the people of the United States. I don’t think Trump realized how corrupted the Deep State became due to Corrupt Obama and Sleazy Sleepy Demented Hidin’ Biden.
This might make for a good anecdote for people like Rineman who was to grab some of the limelight, but the truth is that a guy like Trump does not walk away from a billion dollar business because of a personal insult. It’s more likely he saw how politicians had destroyed the middle class and knew he had the skills to reshape society. He doesn’t do this for himself, although he seems to enjoy it. He does it for us.
100 posts and nobody mentioned that the President himself told Biden it was because of him and Obama messing up the country that he ran.
