TOKYO (AP) Japan has picked Mitsubishi Heavy Industries as a main contractor to develop the countrys own next generation stealth fighter for launch in the 2030s, the defense minister said Friday.
Separately, Mitsubishi announced that it was suspending its civilian aircraft project given uncertainties for the travel industry due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The next generation fighters, currently known as F-X, are part of Japans upgrading of its aging fighter jet fleet as the country builds up its military capability to counter growing threats from China and North Korea.
The next generation stealth jet will replace F-2s that Japan co-developed with the U.S. They are due to be retired around 2035. The Defense Ministry is seeking 58.7 billion yen ($556 million) in the 2021 budget for research into developing the aircraft.

I had an Eagle Talon, then an Eclipse (2001, 40K miles and still running great) and a 2015 Mirage and they have all been great.

I can see Japan as a viable counterweight to the huge growth of China.
30 years from now will the world be engulfed in a new war accross the Pacific and in Europe? Lots of things that will happen the might be entirely based on what happens in three days

They have fulfilled a ten year cargo support contract to the I.S.S. and launch of various deep space scientific missions. Routinely supply launch vehicles in support of JAXA missions.
Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman are two potential partners mentioned in development forward from the ATD-X prototype, which some now reference as the Mitsubishi X-2 Shinshin. BAE may offer some contribution to this program, as yet unspecified.

They did a helluva good job with the original Zero...at least in the early part of the war!
