TV show Dallas was the main reason behind the collapse of communism in the Soviet Union, it has been claimed.
Eurythmics co-founder Dave Stewart said that former Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev told him that the 1980s soap opera 'had more effect' in ending the Cold War than anything else.
Mr Stewart, 68, said the Gorbachev admitted an illicit broadcast of the US show in Russia had opened his people's eyes to Western life, and the Texas-based show 'brought down' the communist superpower.

Never a big fan of the show. Personally I thought it was blue jeans and cheeseburgers that did the USSR in.
In other words, if only they could have continued to block out the truth, the commies could have stayed in power a little longer.
Dang, and we spent trillions on weapons and all we had to do was send them pics of Larry Hagman in a cowboy hat?????.........
Are ya sure it wasnt the soul-crushing reality of their own Soviet lifestyles?
Bar soap?
And Rock and Roll!
And the last thing socialists want is for their people to see how good the rest of the world lives.
Friggin’ JR!
What is funny is JR’s ranch was a moderately sized home in reality, it is in Lucas Tx.
The miracle of TV made it appear huge.
Mikhail Gorbachev blames TV show Dallas for the fall of the USSR .................
This will become known as the Victoria Principal..............
LOL!
That’s really it. Socialism seems like a good idea only if you don’t know the truth of it. It’s a political religion for suckers.
Of course, “Dallas” wasn’t exactly the Truth, but the point is that western values of individual rights, including property rights, are more popular than oppression and poverty. People see it, want it.

Maybe it was Victoria.....................
I remember some story about Boris Yeltsin visiting a supermarket in the US in 1989 and was shocked at the full shelves with all the variety of products. He became an anti-communist at that moment.
By the way, is Twitter still blocking the New York Post?
I recall reading a story somewhere that the communist authorities in East Germany and elsewhere initially thought that shows like Dallas and Dynasty (with Joan Collins and Linda Evans and John Forsythe) would show to people the evils of Western decadence and materialism. However, watching those shows from West German TV stations became that very popular behind the Iron Curtain.
I always thought it was “The Love Boat”.
Apparently, The Love Boat was banned in most Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia because there were always attractive women in bikinis walking through the back round in all the on ship shots.
I think even rich people back then just lived more moderately. McMansions were not yet in vogue.
