Never a big fan of the show. Personally I thought it was blue jeans and cheeseburgers that did the USSR in.

I had a relative who visited the USSR in the early 80s. She said wherever she went she was being begged for, “bubble gum and blue jeans.”

I remember stories about Westerners who traveled to the Soviet Union and people would accept payment in jeans and cigarettes.

Yep.

A smuggled pair of blue jeans or a bootleg rock and roll album were an escape into a different world.

And it is “funny” that Leftists in America have tried to stamp out or subvert fast food, rock and roll, and car culture.

I was living in a part of the world where about half the people spoke english during a couple of years, many were hard core socialists, but yet, the number one show that they talked about was ‘Dallas’. It translates well even with subtitles because everyone understands (or at least they think they do) greed and power. I remember that I was absolutely amazed at the impact at that time. It truly was the number one show in the entire world. When I told people that I grew up in Dallas, they always asked how many oil wells and cattle I owned. I always told them I was one of the ‘hired hands’ that worked for the people that owned the oil wells and cattle (but not J.R. Ewing).
