Elon Musk has been widely mocked after revealing the final version of his much-hyped underground transportation project.
The Tesla and SpaceX founders Boring Company has been building a prototype tunnel system under Los Angeles since 2016 in a bid to relieve traffic congestion.
It had been linked to the billionaires futuristic hyperloop concept of pods suspended on magnets travelling hundreds of kilometres an hour through vacuum tubes.
While The Boring Companys test tunnel did not feature an air vacuum, it promised to create a new kind of private, public and commercial transport system using special vehicles propelled on electric skates.
That concept has now been ditched in favour of a more conventional solution a car in a tunnel. A video released by The Boring Company on Friday shows dashcam footage of a Tesla Model X travelling up to 200km/h through the now-paved tunnel.
Its shown side-by-side with footage of the same journey being made through boring old, above-ground traffic, proving that a single car driving at top speed through a dedicated tunnel with no obstacles will get there faster.
So you turned a four-minute commute into a 90-second commute and all you had to do was spend millions digging a tunnel directly from your house to your destination? Genius! Truly this is a wondrous breakthrough, one Twitter user wrote.
Another said, Imagine this. Build tunnels and have a passengers ride together so one vehicle is not restricted to one person. Build stations along the way for stops. Its a wild idea I know.
Asked why the original idea had been abandoned, Mr Musk replied, This is simple and just works. Another user suggested tunnels were great things to run trains through, not cars.

Agree!
Its shown side-by-side with footage of the same journey being made through boring old, above-ground traffic, proving that a single car driving at top speed through a dedicated tunnel with no obstacles will get there faster.
Not exactly an unexpected result.
If the scenario were reversed the car above ground would be the faster method.
Has NASA tried to do it themselves yet?
Exactly, I want to hop in my car and go without dealing with other people (or at least as little as possible). That’s why I live out west where the speed limits are 70 through the cities and 80 in between. I can drive from Salt Lake to Vegas in just over 5 hours (probably more like 6 for bathroom breaks, a little food, stretch my legs a couple times). Try making 420 miles like that on the east coast. Not from what I’ve seen!
Yep. That’s how I got to this article. I saw a YouTube video that was about two weeks old. I feel a little stupid because I posted thinking that this article was written May of this year. No, it’s from May 2019, but still entirely relevant. An FR search yielded no articles on debunking the hyperloop or Elon catching heat for it, so I figured what the heck. I posted it under chat figuring the mods would go a little easier on that.
No joke, I thought Hyperloop was total crap the day it hit the news. My response was, “Sure, they’ve been promising Mach 3 and even hypersonic airliners for the last 40 years, too.” It kills me how people just believe stuff, especially with rail projects. The recent news is full of failures. Liberals have an outright fetish for rail projects that cost $40 million per mile. There must be very little regulation and a ton of opportunities for kickbacks and skimming.
There’s a Tesla driver born every minute!
Thats ok, the cars wont have windows. Lol.
What could possibly go wrong?
“Also a video made by a traffic engineer showing how Elon’s Boring tunnels wont work because of how the entry and exit points will cause more traffic jams than his tunnels will alleviate.”
For some reason that made me think of the river in my mountain area. In the late 1800’s some bright folk about 30 miles upriver from Asheville decided to build a steamboat to run tourists up and down the river. The boat was built and they discovered on their maiden voyage that it was too large to fit under a road bridge 1/2 way to the city.
They tied it to the bank, stripped the machinery off it and burned it to the waterline.
Rockstar made him a Bond esque villain in Grand Theft Auto 5...
LOL, is that true????
Too funny!
Oh wow!!
That’s a nice way to travel, but the engine needs better emission controls!
