Biden wins the election, but before the electoral college gathers his son gets indicted/arrested for child abuse. And further, that Biden definitively (or close to it) knew that of this abuse, and that the abuse victim was a minor, and perhaps even a relative. What would those electors do? Would they still cast their votes for Biden knowing he allowed a child to be abused? What would happen to those electors back home if they did?

But, I will admit...I lost any desire to predict elections when Obama won in 2012. The first election, I understood. The second one?

Yes.
First of all, democrat electors would never defect.
Second, I’m not sure but I swear I heard recently that the supreme court ruled that electors cannot go against their state’s laws on how they are directed to vote.
Third, a vote for Biden is not a vote for Biden, and everyone knows it. It’s a vote for Harris/Sanders/AOC/etc. No one cares who Biden really is or what he has or hasn’t done.
That’s probably the best answer to the legal issue. But can you imagine the pressure those electors would face knowing they would vote for a child abuse protector? They could whine about “doing their duty”, but how far will that do with the American people. ZERO “profile in courage”.

I do not know if the 25th Amendment succession process is implicated because Biden wouldn’t be “president” if his electors bolted and Trump has the more electoral votes.
The reason I posted this is because there is not a lot of law out there on what happens between election day and the electoral college gathering or inauguration days. But I am sure someone has gamed this out.
