Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is considering a $94 million property tax increase, layoffs for more than 300 city workers and a gas tax hike as part of her plan to close a $1.2 billion budget deficit, sources told the Tribune.

Lightfoot also is considering about $500 million in refinancing city debt to help close the deficit, sources said.

300 employees for a city the size of Chicago is NOTHING!

What she is probably planning is a layoff of 300 to 600 employees in just the police force.

Wonder if even that will be enough to pay for the up-coming riots, looting and new “Chicago Fire” that won’t be started by anybody’s cow this time!!!

Dems just love to fleece the taxpayers so they can line their own pockets.

Raising taxes is going to work out so well. Just ask CA and NY.

Right now the music is playing and the democrats are walking around the chairs. I wonder when the music stops, who will be left without a chair to sit on! And paying the bills!

Gee, who would have thunk that closing down all the businesses would lower the tax revenue. It’s a mystery.

Great idea Leadfoot.

Tax the rich right out of Chicago.

She's such an idiot.

Her idea of filling the gap is like putting your finger in a dike.

At least she/it isn't asking the feds for money to cover her ignorant policies that are up all the other tax monies.

$94 million property tax increase,

$94 million?

She needs billions.

The Democrats spend $94 million per day on a few pensioners. Illinois has 19,000 pensioners who make in the six figures per annum, and some of those are more than $300K/year.

I live in Illinois. The DEMS recently suggested adding $10B to the last covid bailout to “stabilize” the Illinois budget, including the retirement system. Eventually they will get this money, along with the other DEM wastelands, like Minneapolis, Denver, Milwaukee, Portland, Seattle, and San Francisco.

The smart rich folks have already left Chicago.

Now she is starting to spook the remaining herd, and the dumb rich are starting to pay attention.

300 city workers to be laid off? That sounds about like 5 months of gang violence in Chicagoland.

She wants to cover a $1.2 BILLION budget shortfall?

Well, that is gonna have to be a hefty gasoline tax hike.

The $94 million property tax hike, plus #30 million or so from the layoff of 300 city employees totals barely 10%...

At some point, the people will be taxed beyond their tolerance. That time is coming.

I’m wondering if there’s a single case of a democrat ever proposing spending cuts to balance a budget?

Half the money goes to Florida in pensions after city workers leave Chicago to retirement in Florida. Easiest money Florida gets. Lol.

The crews building the wall might have some more work after they’re done at the border to Mexico. We’re going to need a wall around some of our shithole cities.

Lots of Chicago folks coming down here to escape Mayor Light-in-the-Loafers madness...I now see so many Illinois and New York license plates clogging the highways and byways...and they ain't pouring in to this low-tax state for the orange juice.

I'm from the Chicago (GOP) 'burbs...and I ought to know !

Yes, I remember you said you were from the Chicago area. Glad you escaped to Florida many years ago!

We're still stuck in The People's Republik of Connecticut, and NY plates have been all over this state since the China Virus took hold last March. We're up in northern CT where you don't usually see many NY plates (plenty of Massachusetts ones though).

Anyway... NY and IL plates are far more alarming to see in Florida than in CT. God help us all if Florida becomes yet another solid Blue State. :-(
