'No obligation': Joe Biden opposed helping South Vietnamese refugees reach U.S. in 1970s

Democratic presidential front-runner (Joseph R. Biden), who has denounced President Trump’s efforts against Central American asylum-seekers, vigorously opposed resettling as refugees South Vietnamese who had helped the U.S. during the war.

The Washington Examiner ('No obligation': Joe Biden opposed helping South Vietnamese refugees reach U.S. in 1970s) Thursday, citing (records) from the administration of President (Gerald R. Ford), that as a U.S. senator, Mr. Biden tried to deny refuge to hundreds of thousands fleeing the imminent North Vietnamese victory and likely Communist persecution.

Mr. Biden’s arguments about refugees reverse what he and other Democrats now insist are the only moral stances, saying that the U.S. had “no obligation, moral or otherwise, to evacuate foreign nationals,” the Examiner reported.

And many of the descendants of the Boat People have become officers in our Armed Forces, successful entrepreneurs in commerce and leaders in our society.

Back then a refuge making it to our shores was almost a guaranteed republican. This is why democrats were so against them.

Then they started giving free stuff to immigrants and we started getting all the losers and rejects.

The msm holds Kavanaugh to task for a vaguely almost-remembered almost-event from 4 decades ago but will not hold biteme responsible for well-documented factual positions he took across his career, many as recently as 4 years ago.

The Vietnamese were real refugees.

The Central Americans are just porcine bums who want free stuff.

Refugees from Communist countries that is. People were refugees then were for political reasons, now they're for economic reasons, and they are told by the Left that the US is responsible for the economic conditions in their home countries.

Come to think of it have we seen any videos of Biden molesting black, brown, or Asian little girls or young women? Seems like a tell to me and why he opposed Vietnamese refugees. He’s a pedo racist.

I was stationed at Hickam AFB in 1975 and saw the Viet Namese evacuation close up. A visiting officers quarters next to my dorm was used to house families while they waited transportation to the mainland. They arrived with either a suitcase or a sack. The second generation of them that I know are fully integrated and patriotic. They never complain, unlike some Americans who have been here for generations.

No inconsistency here: For democrats, fleeing communism is bad, hence trying to keep the Vietnamese out. But now, bringing communism here is good, so let all the banana republic migrants in to vote themselves a redistributive piece of the pie.

Biden became part of Tom Hayden and Jane Fonda's Coalition for a New Foreign and Military Policy (CNFMP) lobby when he came into office and remained allied with them supporting the Soviet-backed nuclear FREEZE movement and opposing the Contras in the 1980s.

Remember the 1st summer I worked for my dad on a construction job. The electricians were all boat people. Not on welfare sitting on their asses but working good jobs and making a living.

In 1975 I was stationed at Naval Station Subic Bay, Philippines. The South Vietnamese were escaping Vietnam in rickety boats, rafts and anything else that floated. The US Navy had the fleet off the Vietnamese coast rescuing the refugees.

Once they were boarded onto the navy ships their boats, etc were scuttled. The refugees had all of their personal possessions packed in whatever suitcases/bags they could find. Sailors and Marines,(mostly Marines), were tasked with searching the belongings to ensure there were no weapons or drugs/contraband in their possession.

The refugees carried their “money” in form of small gold bars, around 1/2 inch wide and two to three inches long. The sailors/marines were told to throw anything that was suspicious to them overboard, which they did, including the gold. It didn’t take long for there to be a major ruckus over this until the order came down to not throw the gold overboard but to confiscate it, log it and secure it in the Disbursing Officer’s safe.

There were also refugees who had hundred of thousands of dollars in their possession. These were refugees who had owned businesses catering to our military.

Once the refugees were searched and identified, (as best as could be done), they were transported to Subic Bay and taken to Grande Island on the base where we had set up a tent city. Grande Island was an island that was used for recreation for the military with a small clubhouse and kitchen.

The base enlisted galley was tasked with preparing 3 meals a day for the 2-4,000 refugees on the island consisting of rice, chopsuey/stews etc. and then transported in large stainless steel drums, (which were fabricated by the base metal shop), to the island by helicopter and/or boats.

The refugee tents needed to be searched daily in order to confiscate food that the refugees would take from the dining hall and store in case “we” stopped feeding them. The stored food was a health hazard and a magnet for rats and cockroaches, (which in the Philippines were three time larger than US cockroaches).

Many of the refugees were re-located to refugee camps in other Asian countries. Those that were cleared to go to the US were flown to Hawaii and Camp Pendleton, California refugee camps until cleared for entry into the US by immigration.

If I remember correctly the refugees were at Subic Bay for around 4 months.

Sorry for the long history lesson but I lived it. I was on temporary assignment to permanent Shore Patrol before the flotilla started and was recalled to the base galley, (I was a cook at the time), and worked 12 hour days cooking the meals for the refugees.

That was an interesting read—thanks.

I know a Vietnamese lady who came here as a boat refugee. She works for the US government as a very skilled acquisition program manager. If wonder if she may have passed through that island back in the day.

Most likely since Subic Bay was the primary stop over point for all boat people. Some were rescued and taken to other Asian countries such as Thailand but most were rescued by the US Navy and taken to Subic Bay for processing. They usually stay for about a week and then were bused to Clark AFB and flown to their next destination. The Navy ships made weekly port calls at Subic Bay with a new group of refugees. It was total chaos for the 4+ months of the operation.
