Thousands of farmed minks have died from COVID-19 in Utah

Nearly 10,000 minks have died across several farms in Utah due to COVID-19 in a matter of weeks, a state official said.

State veterinarian Dean Taylor told NBC News that the deaths have been spread across nine mink farms in Utah over just two weeks.

While the official noted “research indicates there hasn’t been a spread from minks to humans,” he said that the minks suffered from respiratory issues, which have also been reported among humans.

“Minks show open mouth breathing, discharge from their eyes and nose, and are not sick for several days before they pass away. They typically die within the next day,” he told the network.

He also said that older animals have proven to be more vulnerable to the disease.

I hate mink farms and never wear fur.

I will wear their skins happily.

I have seen a coop after the weasels in fancy coats finished.

DIE MINK DIE!

“I have seen a coop after the weasels in fancy coats finished.”

We had one keep getting in our chicken house. It would kill multiple birds a night and eat a few of them. I finally nailed him with a #2 Victor leg trap.

Trained mink are great at ferreting out rats on farms. They flush the rats out of their holes and dogs finish them off.

“We are fortunate OF have synthetic furs nowadays” = “We are fortunate TO have synthetic furs nowadays”, above. Slip of the fingers.

There were reports last spring that the Tigers in the New York City zoos were ill with COVID and also that it can be passed to dogs.

Covid is zoonotic- meaning it infects animals, not just humans.
It can skip around species. Go from one to another.
Nasty little bugger.

So what proof do we have the minks died from any human respiratory disease? Sounds more like they were poisoned.

I only was responding to what the story said. I have no idea if the minks involved had Wuhan/CCP virus or not.

I have suspected it’s a nasty little bugger when I saw national leaders shut their economies down back in March. I would still like to know what they were told and so far nothing has really leaked.

We were able to beat smallpox because it was confined to humans. I think that might be the only virus we’ve ‘beaten’.

May we manage our wildlife resources well; ultimately they are our food bank

Communist China raided all their food banks long ago. Few birds chirp in the morning as that would bring a death sentence.

The wild could support only a tiny percentage of population. City slickers are plain out of luck and should focus on cannibalism skills. There's plenty of blubber on welfare whales.

” what they were told “
Well, at that time we had Fauci saying that people shouldn’t wear masks, and covid was no big deal.
I assume most leaders heard the same from their med advisors.

Not sure of our historical successes against zoonotic viruses. I’d guess we’ve had some.

...the idea that Wuhan/CCP virus infects and kills animals not closely related to human beings somewhat troubling.

In south central Pennsylvania there were hardly any fireflies this summer.

In late summer/early fall, almost no yellow jackets aka “ground hornets”.

I miss the former but not the latter.

Fewer squirrels but I’ve seen more foxes.

I was in Army flight school at Ft Rucker AL. There was a mink farm about a mile from the airfield and clearly marked as a no-fly zone. Lighted and visible at night.

We were then flying at night, learning night flight techniques. Next morning we also learned that 2d Lt Norman Numbnuts thought it would be fun to buzz the mink farm. A Huey helicopter makes an enormous roar at low altitude. The result was hundreds of mink that had died of sheer fright.

I’ve been to a mink farm, they are extremely nervous and never stop moving in their cages. Lt Numbnuts was expelled from the flight program, given an Article 15, and handed a huge bill.
