I have a question about the Professor on Gilligan's Island?

Posted on 10/11/2020 6:53:42 AM PDT by Jonty30

Was he a professor of Economics or Gender Studies?

Since he didn’t hit on Mary Ann I would say he was a fag, Jim.

He frequently worked with Ginger, and though Mary Ann is serious wife material, Ginger is not exactly chopped liver. We don't know what happened off screen.

“More importantly: Ginger or Mary Ann?”

Does anyone ever say Ginger?

Gender Studies?

That wasn’t a problem back then so no need to study it.

Wait...he has a PhD in science and teaches at a high school? That is way below his capabilities, especially in 1964.

And, obviously, he is an INCEL by choice.

Season 2, episode 2 -

“Beauty Is as Beauty Does” is the episode where the girls all compete in a beauty contest to elect ‘Miss Castaway,’ Skipper championing Ginger, the Professor all in for Mary Ann, and Mr. Howell naturally voting for Mrs. Howell. Guess who’s left to be final judge?

If he was a psychologist, perhaps he didn’t fix the boat to see how people would interact while being on a desert island.

And with all his gadgets, he gave them false hope of escape. And then he could see the effect of losing the chance to escape again.

Maybe Economics before the wreck .... ‘gender studies’ after? :-)

What I always loved was that this out of the way, deserted island was like Grand Central Station, with anyone and everyone passing through, yet the castaways could never quite find a way off it.

Oh yeah, and Jeannie by a mile.

I used to work as a directory assistance operator. We often got calls from customers wanting the phone number of a TV character. It’s frightening how many people really do believe that TV shows are real. They walk among us.

I watched the episodes as a kid. I have watched many reruns over the years. Not once did I see the Professor checking out either chick. Just sayin’.

That’s a common phenomena.

I read an interview with Dan Blocker (who played Hoss Cartwright in Bonanza) years ago where he related an interaction he had with an older lady somewhere in LaLa land where he lived and she engaged him in a conversation about his family, life on the ranch, asked how (named characters) were doing and to give his best to his Pa from her.

He hadn’t known this was a thing.

The movie Galaxy Quest had fun playing with this concept, with young “Trekkie”-like adolescent geekazoids were - in their heart of hearts - convinced the show was based on reality only to find out that yes, it was.

The way I know things on TV are only play acting is, when I turn off the TV, I can’t find references to any of the things on it elsewhere - if I avoid tabloids at the grocer’s checkout stands or entertainment section of the local paper.

I remember reading Ed O’Neill (Al Bundy on Married With Children) say that shortly after the show ended he got a serious role in a stage play. But when he walked on stage the first time, the whole audience cracked up laughing. “Al” was too big to overcome

It's not uncommon. Every time I saw Alan Alda in anything, he seemed like Hawkeye Pierce to me.

Rob Reiner questioned the success of "All In The Family" until he went to see an old film of Julius Caesar where Carroll O'Connor happened to be playing the role of Brutus. When it came time for the assassination scene, folks yelled from their seats "Get 'im Archie!" and he knew the show was having an impact.

One of my favorite films is "Fail Safe" where up and coming actors Walter Matthau, Dom DeLuise and Larry Hagman all played serious roles before each had become famous for comedy and it was odd to see each of them not playing for laughs.

Finally, Groucho Marx would relate how angry it made him when ordinary people would not take him seriously. They just presumed everything he said was some sort of joke and would laugh at him. What a curse to have.

Slightly OT but does anyone remember the episode where a Japanese holdout from the war sails his mini-sub into the lagoon?

He had buck teeth and coke bottle bottom glasses and other stereotypes of the day. Current TV muckety-mucks would have a cow if anyone proposed such a thing today.

that was always my question. If he was such a brilliant scientist, why the heck couldn’t he fix the damn boat? I always suspected that he had a thing going on with Mary Anne and knew she would dump him the minute they left the island. Hey, hollywood sucks anyway, so I can make up my own subplots.
