Reportedly it is a type of trap-door spider. I get the impression that it would rather be left alone.

I’m guessing because people kept killing his specimens WITH FIRE?
Note to self: Stay OUT of Moss Landing State Park. Especially after dark. And if Hillary! is anywhere nearby. ;)

I think the photo has been magnified about 15X or so.
I’m looking at that Maple leaf. The pores and wrinkles would never be quite that large in nature.

By the way I don't think there is such a place as Moss Landing State Park, I assume they mean Moss Landing State Beach.
If you go there, it's not bad. I see surfers there. Don't forget to see the Sea Otters in the Slough, and grab a bite at Phil's. You might see a whale.

I miss going to the beaches there. We would often go to Zmudowski because it was usually completely empty and we had the whole beach to ourselves.

I’ve seen those or similar all over Monterey and Big Sur. We squished them and I see another one it’s splat time.
