I’m not even mentioning the number text messages I get for “Petra.”

Identity theft! Put your number on the no call list and just hang up on the criminals.

It was probably his phone number previously. I believe you can change your cell phone number. Call your carrier.

It’s not a bug, it’s a feature.

There are a number of sites out there that post deliberately fake address and phone number combinations. Apparently the site owners think they’re doing the public a service - the more fake data there is the harder it will be to verify someone’s number if it is compromised.

Now the pay sites - I assume those are all good address/phone number combinations. If you know which site it is you could contact them. Otherwise maybe just get a new phone number?

You can sue them for misinformation.

One of the ones I saw wants money to take some information offline. To me that is extortion and I told them so.

And my profile has bad intel as well. And same with some other people I have looked up.

They don’t care.

They bought the info from one person and sell it all to another.

I had a good friend that lived in a downtown area back in the 1970s. For awhile, he would get calls in a thick accent asking for Pedro. He would try to explain that this was the wrong number but the calls would keep coming. One day, the phone rang and the caller asked for Pedro. Fed up, my friend adopted a thick accent and said.

“Choo dinn hear, man? Pedro’s dead! Yeah, Pedro’s dead, man!” and then he hung up. The calls for Pedro stopped after that.

I’m not recommending you do this, but it is now on your list of options. Good luck.

They probably used the number for something they never intended to pay and then because lists get sold and sold and sold it’s now all over. There’s basically nothing you can do. Tell the ones you answer it’s a wrong number, block the ones that won’t listen.

(1) Don’t answer your phone unless you recognize the number. If they want to talk to you they will leave a voicemail. Spammers usually just hang up.
(2) If they leave a voicemail and it doesn’t identify the source in a way that satisfies you, block the number.
(3) If they don’t leave a voicemail. block the number.

Easy peasy.

Can’t help you directly. But I’ve finally got to the point that I don’t
answer any calls that I don’t know or have stored in my phone memory.

Not sure about your responsiblity question. Tell callers the person they are calling died and left you their cell phone.

Happened to me in WA State. Some very graphic phone calls and text, day and night. I kept telling them wrong number. Finally got mad as hell and started yelling in the phone that I was going to call the Policia. They understood that and the calls/texts ceased

Get/download a cell phone call blocker ap.

I use CallDetector on my Tracfone. It is not 100%, but it is better than nothing.

Your number may have been ‘harvested’. I bought a new Tracfone recently with a new number. I gave the number to 2 relatives. I do get occasional spam calls and, more recently, spam texts even on the new number.

If the call is a number or ID than I do not recognize, I just click on the ‘block call’ feature. If it is important, they will leave a message on my voice mail. Otherwise, they are ‘blocked’ the next time they call.

Download a fax machine sound file. Keep it cued up on your computer. When one of those calls come in just start the file and lay the phone by the speaker. When it's done just hang up.

Now if you're one of those who does all their internetting on the phone, then I don't know.

There are also 'Disconnected number' sound files.

I had this happen about 4 years ago and some gal put “my” number down as hers and it went to all the collection agencies.

I had an app to block numbers and as soon as I got one blocked them.

I know it’s a pain but you don’t want to have to change your number.

I use an app called Hiya. It’s free, identifies spam or fraud calls, sends a text saying ‘I don’t know you, text me and state your business’, and lets me block the number easily. Works well for me.

Okay, the pat “change your number” advice is poorly thought out. So, I’d go from a 20-year established phone number to a recycled number that someone else had possibly only 6 months ago. How does that help anything? I’m likely to get a lot MORE calls for previous phone number owners.

This problem only started about 5 years ago, so someone was erroneously connected with my phone number at that time. For the previous 15 years, there were no problems at all. The problem is the current listing on the internet. I need to know how to get that deleted.
