Weekly Garden Thread - October 3-9, 2020
October 3, 2020 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 10/03/2020 5:39:46 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

LOL! Thanks! I was ready for promotion to Warrant Officer, but my boss wouldn’t retire. I could’ve probably bribed him with a few more points. ;)

Oh, Ok. Understood!

I was just thinking that if it was clear, it’d make a great “wallpaper” for my monitor.

Oh, well - I have lots of others to choose from!

I’m hoping our fall will be very pretty this year too. But, we shall see. It may have gotten dry a week or two too soon....

The farmers here are likely very happy, though. Most got good rains through the summer, and now it is dry for harvest.

What the HECK is THAT? Well, I'll tell ya! It's a caterpillar (Duh!) and it is about 2" long, fat, bristly black hair - kind of like a Wooly Bear, but about twice the size. It is the larvae of the Giant Leopard Moth. First one I've ever seen. I was going to save it for Beau to see, but all it did was poop on me a lot, so I let it go. Nature Rocks. 🙂

On sale for $150.00! That would be awesome to own. The oldest apple tree I've ever 'owned' was a White Winter Pearmain and it was awesome. Now, the new owners of my old farm 'own' it. We're having good luck with the 'Liberty' apple and are going to add more. We have 'Haralson', 'Wolf River', 'Bonnie Best' and two 'Honeycrisp', none of which are great producers, though the Liberty is dependable. At this point in my life, I'm going with the 'sprayless' varieties for ease of maintenance; 'Liberty' 'Enterprise' and 'Freedom.'

Diana;

History of apples in the U.S.

Every land grant College or university with a school of agriculture should have this reference work for their pomology programs. A good school of American history that analyses original source documents from early American History—letters, wills, newspapers— might consider it as well.

Since it’s October, here’s a link to a nice article about various pumpkin varieties:

https://gardenerspath.com/plants/vegetables/best-pie-pumpkins/

For decorative purposes, Aldi had some nice carving pumpkins for $2.50 ea., a couple days ago. I bought two - hope they hold up!

BTW, Aldi also had something I’d never tried before, “Plumcots”. They are really good!

Aldi Rocks! Wish I lived closer to one - but it’s worth the Day Trip once in a while, for sure! ;)

When I was feeding two adult males, three teen boys and myself, Aldi saved me! The boys KNEW that if they TOUCHED ‘Mom’s Aldi Quarter’ (to ‘rent’ the shopping cart) in the car ashtray they would be instantly ‘murderized,’ LOL!

And this was back in the day when a Quarter for an Arcade Game was the most important thing on their minds! ;)

Hahahaha!!

Our local Aldi has been selling milk (skim, 2%, and whole) @ $1.59 a gallon for some time. Our local Wally World met it for a while, then jumped up over $2, came back down to $1.79, now they are again matching Aldi @ $1.59. All the other WalMarts in the immediate area, that I know of, are over $2.

Why do I think that someone @ WalMart “corporate” is not pleased with our store...?
