“I was doing auto maint. work already - Sunday afternoon just got even busier...”

My ‘winter car’ (2008 Ford Escape) needs an oil change, a new battery and a look at the rear brakes before she’s road-worthy for a Wisconsin Winter. I think it’s going to be a cold one. We’ve already had one freeze, and another tonight, and our usual Freeze Date is Mid-October. But, we ARE in a Solar Minimum, so I’m prepared to bundle up.

Clock’s Tickin’! Beau will be home in another week or so from bear hunting. His ‘Honey-Do’ List is longer than it’s ever been. ;)

Yay! Lovely cucumbers and tomatoes!

After a week of rain and cloudy skies, we FINALLY had a cool but SUNNY day. The greenhouse got up to 85 today, though the outside temp wasn’t even 50.

I had to fashion a replacement panel on one of the doors with duct tape and a sheet of styrofoam, which, amazingly fit perfectly! Kinda proud of myself, though I know it was just luck, LOL! (Beau will fix it before the snow flies; he’s still off hunting bears; the bears are winning this year.)

I have a basket full of beautiful peppers and I lined them up today, to see who could ‘stand’ on their own for Stuffed Peppers I’m going to make and freeze, tomorrow. The rest will be chopped for stews and chili and stir-fries and my favorite, ‘Unstuffed Pepper Soup.’

I need to take some more pictures, tomorrow. ;)

It’s hard for me to realize that your part of Wisconsin and Humboldt Bay are on the same Parallel (Or nearly so)

Haha - well, if Mo’ Nature was going to be firing off a bunch of additional frosty nights at us, soon, I’d just give in. But, since the next couple weeks (and after) are projected to be above normal temperature, and our 1st freeze is normally around 10/26, I wanted to see if I could get most of the plants past tonight. A couple years I’ve kept tomatoes producing (a little) until Thanksgiving. This year, Halloween looks “likely”, with any luck at all. It’d be nice...

On another topic, those wood bees I asked about, last thread: I read this morning @ breakfast that wood bees are repelled by loud sounds and vibrations. If that’s true, I can simply stick a flat-back-of-magnet woofer (I have several) onto the steel “skin” of the building, hook up a sound source, and give ‘em the Manuel Noriega treatment, spraying them as they exit. Repeat in Spring if needed.

I LIKE the idea of being on the same parallel as you and yours. We’re certainly on the same ‘wavelength!’ :)

4-month drought got a break last week. Rained hard. 2 inches. Didn’t have to water the forest.

Still have a few cukes. Planted late. Wild turkeys ignore them.

Took a barrel of weeds and dumped behind shed, where they become wildflowers next year. Nothing grows back there. The weeds should help with erosion.

I mow over leaves to mulch ... fertilizer for lawn. Saves all the raking.

I've hit the Weather Jackpot for the next week to ten days! My greenhouse cherry tomatoes will be so happy after a few chilly nights, though it hasn't gotten below 50 in the greenhouse, yet. Yay!

Probably one of the best Fall Foliage Displays I've ever captured. This was the Back Forty at my old farm and every star aligned perfectly that season - gradually colder evenings, no wind and rain. Every leaf was perfect! (Near Fitchburg, WI)

Ah, my Sunday afternoon-into-night of setting up frost protection for the garden did the trick, even tho’ temps overnight dropped 3 deg. below what was forecast on Sunday afternoon, and it was absolutely clear and calm. Yay!

Now we are set for at least a week more of really nice, slightly warmer than avg. fall weather right when we should have really nice fall weather! None of this (last 2-3 years) of lurching from summer into winter. Amazing!!

The bad news is that due to CV-19, my wife and daughter don’t get any fall break this year (so we could go camping with perfect weather for it.)

Still, God is Great! (This time, for sure!)

My wife makes a very good eggs & squash & more recipe. I’ll have to try to get her to write it down so I can post it here.

I think I remember that pic, or another very similar that you posted? It is truly lovely! Do you have a larger version?

Sorry, nothing larger. It was taken from quite a distance with my little Canon digital. It gets ‘fuzzy’ when made any bigger.

Those colors were amazing that year, though. Doesn’t happen often enough!

Thanks for that goes to Liz......our resident Garden Chef. I have been having eggplant
w/ eggs sauteed in olive oil since that egg 'n eggplant recipe was on the garden thread.

Nice to know the recipe was a hit. It's a version of "Toad in The Hole:"
center cutout slice of bread sauteed w/ a sunny side up egg.

As usual, I never stop thinking about my raised beds and how to grow more in them, while making the garden prettier. I'm going to ask Beau to add two 'layers' of additional boxes on the ends of some of the beds for planting flowers and herbs.

Thanks Liz!

Diana...we had a thing in the Navy (wait folks....there is more to the sentence so quit wagging your tongues) where we would give credit for all our good work, then put him in for an award, to one guy who was trying to get promoted

That award was worth 2 points on a promotional exam.

That is essentially what I was doing by giving you credit for the recipe.
