The Great Debate (vanity post)
Original content | 9/30/2020 | By Laz A. Mataz

Candidate Biden exceeded expectations and did well. He showed up, he had cogent moments, and he made very few verbal stumbles. Biden spoke a lot of lies but he was smooth in his delivery. However -- surprisingly -- I am seeing even liberal organs (such as the New York Times) call him out on those.

President Trump did very well, and in certain segments he definitely rocked. However, he interrupted and spoke over people too much. It came across as too aggressive. It also didn't allow Biden to have the chance to hang himself. Trump's performance did not knock Biden out. It was a missed opportunity.

I think Trump did very well on law and order, and on the economy, and especially on reopening America fully. I think those are the really important issues right now. People are tired of the lockdowns, the restrictions, and the virus. They want to move back toward a normal life. Trump did do a good job of framing that.

Biden did a good job looking into the camera and speaking directly to the people. He also had emotional tones in his voice at times, and that connects very well with suburban moms. Because he 'emoted' and Trump did not, I think Biden gets a big boost with the suburban mom crowd from this.

I think Trump wasted a lot of time with the Hunter Biden stuff. People don’t care. Biden was smart not to hammer the Trump tax stuff too much. Again, people don’t care.

I don’t think Biden’s renouncing of the Green New Deal or other leftwing agendas will hurt him too much, because the left will figure, “Well who ELSE am I going to vote for?” On the other hand, there were several occasions when Biden simply was not able to answer a direct question, and I think that hurts him with independent men.

I also see that while Trump will be likely losing some suburban moms for his being aggressive, he’s picking up 66% approvals from Hispanics and many black men for the no-BS nature.

On the whole, I'd say this debate was a wash.

There is also the observation that incumbent Presidents do horribly in their first debate. Remember Pappy Bush against Clinton? GW Bush against Kerry? Obama against Romney? Even Reagan against Mondale went spectacularly wrong. Incumbent presidents generally return with much better performances. The fact that Trump had anything close to a tie, means Trump did well.

I've heard people from both sides say that their man did poorly. That made me realize something: We tend to notice our side's mistakes much more and not the other side's. We end up being hyper-critical of our guy. I was interested when I heard that folk on Democrat Underground were very upset with Biden's performance. That's when this premise occurred to me... OF COURSE! We, on either side, want OUR guy to perform perfectly. The Left says, "Biden did THAT wrong and should have done THIS", and the Right says: "Trump did THIS wrong and should have done THAT!"

We cannot trust the media polls about this debate, at all. Frankly, with the planned (and announced) fraud, I suspect we cannot trust the poll that will occur the entire month of November, instead of November third, when it should have been decided.

Very good comments. Nothing to disagree with.

I’d add that Chris Wallace was a total disgrace the way he admonished and corrected and badgered the President as well as had loaded questions and comments from Trump out of context, in short totally corrupt, - but I guess both sides expected that from a Left Wing Activist

Oh, I agree. It just wasn't the focus of this editorial.

Biden may have had his “Gerald Ford” moment, when he stated that “Antifa is an idea.”.

It reminded me of when Gerald Ford lost the election when he stated that the Soviet Union was not dominating Poland.

About Trump interrupting too much:

Biden performed just good enough to CRUSH Hillary’s hope of jumping in at the last minute to Save the Party.

I guess Wallace forgot to follow-up on that damning statement by asking if it was a good idea or a bad idea.

Wired Joe offered up a Green New Deal sandwich. First he said he does not support the Green New Deal, then he went on to extol the virtues of the Green New Deal and then when Chuck (as Joe calls him) Wallace asked him if supports the Green New Deal, he said he doesn’t.

Nothing like having an unbiased moderator; better it should have been a brick instead. At least you wouldn’t hear dumb remarks from it.

I agree with what you say, except for two possible extensions. I don’t think Wallace would stand by and let Biden hang himself. He always rode to his rescue. And, when Biden looked pleadingly into the camera to emote, he looked weak as water and not “presidential” at all.

Squishy suburban moms would have turned it off. Trump was like the kid in the playground who was being confronted by the bully and his stooge; the bully being Wallace and the stooge being Biden.

Trump's decision to not let Biden ramble, followed by Wallace changing the subject, basically translated to the viewers that Trump was debating two people. That is why I believe Trump won outright. When it became obvious that Biden was almost inconsequential, Trump interrupted and got in his licks. My opinion.

Very good summation indeed.

As I said in real-time your points are well taken but I disagree with your tests as to who won and who lost.

I believe we should judge whether each candidate accomplished what he had to.
