Guilty as charged to some of those questions.
Less now than 20 years ago when I let go of my beloved
WEB-TV. I had to. None of the sales people at Best Buy knew much of anything about WEB-TV.

I had to take ‘one small step’ for a Boomer and get a Laptop.

Documented 30 something

“I hold my document up to my PS’s screen but it won’t go in? What do I do? “

Just switch that around a bit to some GA private pilot talking to traffic control ...

My wife’s uncle used to call me several times a month to print something from his iphone. I would patiently explain it to him. Once he couldn’t get his computer to do something and was amazed when I Facetimed him and was able to look at his screen. Another time he wanted to print out a 180 page instruction book on something when he had it in pdf.

Why Only Seniors Can Have Cell Phones

How many seniors took selfies on cliff edges and fell over? 0

How many younger people took selfies on cliff edges and fell over? 100s

Having been in the business for 30 years these are very close to my encounters. Trying to troubleshoot over the phone was the most exasperating part of the job. It wasn't just the elderly either.

I was trying to get a lady to find the "My Computer" icon.

ME: What's at the top of your screen?

Her: Samsung.

Me: I'll be there in an hour.

Actually happened to me while setting up a user

“Type in a password”
(After 5 minutes of anguish, types something in)
“Ok hit return and type it in again”
“I don’t remember what it was”

I had an older student say, ‘I don’t use the confuzer but I can get my daughter to look it up on the innertube.’

An older woman in my office was befuddled when computers replaced typewriters. She couldn’t figure out why formulas in her Lotus program wouldn’t compute. Turns out she was entering a lower-case “L” instead of numerical “1”. Well, that’s where “1” was on typewriters.

Seniors huh?
I am a “senior” and I bet I know a heck of lot more about computers than a lot of you young pups.
Do any of these young people even know anything about Dos and the days before gui or how to interface with IBM mainframes and AS400s and Digital VAXs from back in the day?
I think most millenials are addicted to their smart phones and texting and Facebook and whatnot.
Outside of the techies, the rest of them don't seem to know a whole lot about computers. JMHO.

I bought an inexpensive computer for my Mom & Dad years ago. I knew Mom would like to keep in touch with her friends via email, so a computer seemed to be a good idea.

My Dad would have nothing to do with the thing. He waited for me to visit on Sundays to dial up some funny Dean Martin, Don Rickles, or Foster Brooks on YouTube, but never wanted to touch the keyboard.

Finally, I bought some “Las Vegas” software that allowed him to play blackjack. That kept his interest for a few months.

One day, Mom called while I was driving. She needed to know where the apostrophe was located on the keyboard.

That was quite a while back. Dad passed away five years ago, and Mom lives with us. She has dementia, and can’t figure out solitaire anymore.

A lot depends on whether seniors ever used computers during their work careers. I’ve had a personal computer since 1983. There are some seniors with much experience and knowledge of computers.

These one-liners have been around for years and they are pretty funny despite the idea seniors can’t use computers. We should be reminded it was people who are now seniors that created all this technology. Most millennials can’t engineer their way out of wet paper bag.

My first hand story is from the early 2000s. I was working for a small book publisher that only had computers in typesetting, the press floor, and order entry.

I was getting them up to speed, including the head editor (in her early 50s) who had never used a computer.

She generally picked up the principles of word processing pretty quickly, though she still wanted to put two spaces after the periods. One day, however, I saw her holding up a sheet of printed paper by the monitor.

It turns out she was holding the paper to try to match the size of the text on the screen to the size of the paper. I suppressed a chuckle, and explained things to her.
