Why seniors should not have computers!
email from friend | 9/26/2020 | unknown

Posted on 09/26/2020 7:53:05 AM PDT by sodpoodle

Documented conversations between Tech Support staff and (technologically impaired) seniors....

Tech support: What kind of computer do you have? Customer: A white one... Tech support: Click on the 'my computer' icon on to the left of the screen. Customer: Your left or my left? ************************

Customer: Hi, good afternoon, this is Martha, I can't print. Every time I try, it says 'can’t find printer’. I've even lifted the printer and placed it in front of the monitor, but the computer still says he can't find it..

*************************

Customer: My keyboard is not working anymore. Tech support: Are you sure it's plugged into the computer? Customer: No. I can't get behind the computer. Tech support: Pick up your keyboard and walk 10 paces back. Customer: OK Tech support: Did the keyboard come with you? Customer: Yes Tech support: That means the keyboard is not plugged in.

*************************

Customer: I can't get on the Internet. Tech support: Are you sure you used the right password? Customer: Yes, I'm sure. I saw my colleague do it. Tech support: Can you tell me what the password was? Customer: Five dots.

*************************

Tech support: What anti-virus program do you use? Customer: Netscape. Tech support: That's not an anti-virus program. Customer: Oh, sorry... Internet Explorer..

*************************

Customer: I have a huge problem. A friend has placed a screen saver on my computer, but every time I move the mouse, it disappears. *************************

Tech support: How may I help you? Customer: I'm writing my first email. Tech support: OK, and what seems to be the problem? Customer: Well, I have the letter 'a' in the address, but how do I get the little circle around it? *************************

A woman customer called the Canon help desk with a problem with her printer. Tech support: Are you running it under windows? Customer: 'No, my desk is next to the door, but that is a good point. The man sitting in the cubicle next to me is under a window, and his printer is working fine.'

When working, the young ones knew everything about their cell phones but I had to teach them everything about Access, Excel and PowerPoint!

I bought an inexpensive computer for my Mom & Dad years ago. I knew Mom would like to keep in touch with her friends via email, so a computer seemed to be a good idea.

My Dad would have nothing to do with the thing. He waited for me to visit on Sundays to dial up some funny Dean Martin, Don Rickles, or Foster Brooks on YouTube, but never wanted to touch the keyboard.

Finally, I bought some “Las Vegas” software that allowed him to play blackjack. That kept his interest for a few months.

One day, Mom called while I was driving. She needed to know where the apostrophe was located on the keyboard.

That was quite a while back. Dad passed away five years ago, and Mom lives with us. She has dementia, and can’t figure out solitaire anymore.

Agree. How about debugging Assembler code using multiple Microfiche output negatives instead of hard copy paper? That’s patience, I tell ya.

A lot depends on whether seniors ever used computers during their work careers. I’ve had a personal computer since 1983. There are some seniors with much experience and knowledge of computers.

Oldie but goodie and one of my favorites. Help desk call:
the cup holder tray that comes out of the front of the computer keeps going back in.

These one-liners have been around for years and they are pretty funny despite the idea seniors can’t use computers. We should be reminded it was people who are now seniors that created all this technology. Most millennials can’t engineer their way out of wet paper bag.

Do new phones have cliff edge sensors in them?

My first hand story is from the early 2000s. I was working for a small book publisher that only had computers in typesetting, the press floor, and order entry.

I was getting them up to speed, including the head editor (in her early 50s) who had never used a computer.

She generally picked up the principles of word processing pretty quickly, though she still wanted to put two spaces after the periods. One day, however, I saw her holding up a sheet of printed paper by the monitor.

It turns out she was holding the paper to try to match the size of the text on the screen to the size of the paper. I suppressed a chuckle, and explained things to her.

I am an older fart.

Digital? Yes. Worked for them for awhile.

IBM DOS, MS DOS, IBM PC, to modern computers and OSs. Smart phones, only as a user.

Apple. A little. Apple make a good product but it is not a good value. I have been burned too many times.

Interesting story... the evolution of all things computer.

WinTel have changed our lives forever, employed hundreds of millions of people, made trillions of dollars for companies.

Steve Jobs goal was to make the computer as easy to use as any other appliance, like a fridge or toaster.

I guess they still have a ways to go.
