The Marine Corps has fielded its first new service pistol in 35 years, Pentagon officials announced Tuesday, with M18s now being issued across the service.
Marine Corps leaders said the M18 Modular Handgun System will replace all other sidearms, including the M9, M9A1, M45A1 and M007. The transition, which began earlier this month, comes amid a broader shift across the military toward a new generation of handguns.
Overall, the adoption of the M18 by the Marine Corps is an extremely positive decision that will benefit the Corps and enhance Marines safety and effectiveness when conducting missions, said Tom Vass, the Armys project officer for the Sig Sauer-made pistol, which has its U.S. headquarters in Exeter, New Hampshire.
The Marine Corps move toward the M18 is part of a broader Army-led program which began in 2017. Officials said the Marine Corps will buy its M18s along with new holsters through an Army contract.

Son and his girlfriend saw a trainload of them a couple weeks ago. Sounded like a battalions worth at minimum.
“That is DAO.”
Nope.
Makes sense, they sure make a nice pistol(s).
My Legion is, but I think they have other types. I'm sold on the DA/SA.
Amen.
As with anything guns, everyone has an opinion. As both a firearms instructor and having some connections with law enforcement professionals, I am informed that modern defensive ammunition for the 9mm is as effective as 45 ACP. Now I dont know if the military is still restricted to ball ammo or not for combat with the handgun. The 9mm is less weight than the 45 ACP by up to 100 grain or more, but the muzzle velocity is also anywhere from 400 to 600 ft/sec higher. the 9mm is smaller and lighter than the 45 ACP so you can carry more ammo, and mag capacity is more. So like everything, its a trade.
The 1911 in 45ACP is still a good handgun. But the P320 is as well, and has a lot of things going for it now that bugs have been worked out. The Beretta is replaces was a POS if you ever had to use it in a dry dirty environment. Besides being prone to malfunctions from seizing up with dirt or just not enough lube, the M9’s open slide design is everything you dont want for pinching/nicking skin when dealing with malfunctions.
Newer Sig models (i.e. P320, P365) are striker fired like Glocks.
I agree 100%, John Moses Browning was a genius.
Beretta makes a DAO (92D). Wonder why they didn’t just stick with Beretta since it’s already a known platform?
This.
Goofballs like me think they’re both wrong and that 10mm is still best millimeter...
First pistol I ever shot on the range at Ft Wood in 1958!
Those 9mm look pretty but I want a pistol that knocks’em down!
NOW it's Perfect. Even says so right on the side.
As ol’ Colonel Jeff used to say:
“The 9mm has been killing Europeans for years. The .45 is the most proven manstopper, ever.”
Will they now sell their old service pistols back to the PUBLIC since they were purchased with Public Money. the way they did before 1968?
Don’t hold your breath.
We brought the .45 to two World Wars and beat the Germans who brought their 9mm. Hmmm
I like my .45 ACP, almost twice the bullet weight and almost twice the powder to push it. A lot more striking effect to a .45 tha a 9mm or .38 Spl.
They do to me, as well.
