Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Monday that Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will lie in state in National Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol. She will be the first woman to ever do so. She will also lie in repose at the Supreme Court, it was announced by the court.

Pelosi said the ceremony for Ginsburg will be held Friday, Sept. 25. It will be by invitation only, because of the coronavirus. Rosa Parks lay in honor at the U.S. Capitol, a distinction extended to private citizens, as opposed to government officials like Ginsburg. Ginsburg will also be the first Jewish person to lie in state at the U.S. Capitol. For reference, thirty-three people have lain in state at the Captol, all men. It is an honor typically extended to presidents, congressmen or military leaders. The most recent to lie in state were Democrats – Rep. Elijah Cummings and John Lewis both civil rights leaders, in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

“Sandra Day (the first woman - nominated by a REPUBLICAN) had retired, and so wasn’t a government of when she passed away. "

Sandra Day is still alive.

Nice of Sandra Day O’Connor to retire and not have to be held up and wheeled around.

RBG is a ghoul. Killing babies until her dying breath and calling it women’s rights.

She’s supposed to be Jewish, right? Why isn’t she in the ground already?

Well, no that didn't happen.

I thought Jewish funerals were supposed to be the next day after death. They could have sat shiva in the Capitol, the SC, the halls of Congress, whatever.

Allowed to delay for Jewish holiday. But she should be in ground by now.

>> Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Monday that Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will lie in state in National Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol. She will be the first woman to ever do so. <<

Looks like the MSM is lying AGAIN.

I distinctly remember it made headlines in 2005 when Rosa Parks was "laying in state" at the U.S. Capitol Building. Yes, that IS the phrase they used, NOT "laying in honor". And they made it CLEAR was an unprecedented honor for her to receive that status as a PRIVATE CITIZEN, rather than a retired public official or decorated military veteran.

=========================================================

in 2005, Rosa Parks, a civil rights pioneer, was mourned when her casket was placed in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol for two days of public viewing. Parks was the first woman and the second African-American to lie in state there. She was the 31st person, the first American who had not been a U.S. government official , and the second private person (after the French city planner Pierre L'Enfant) to be honored in this fashion.

==========================================================

Reminds me of the anti-Trump headlines about the how "Presidential historians" claimed it was "unprecedented" that a former high ranking cabinet member published a tell-all book criticizing the President they worked for, while that President was still in office. Apparently those "historians" forgot that numerous Bush administration officials did so.

>> Rosa Parks laid in Honor, not in State. <<

NOT what they claimed at the time. I distinctly remember numerous statements from the mainstream media that she was "laying in state"

I suspect history revisionism now, so they can claim Ruth Bader Ginsburg as the "first" woman to have that honor.

>> Is it just me or have we been lowering the bar on burying people “In State” over the last decade or so? <<

In the case of Darth Bader Ginsburg, that's certainly true. She's hardly some kind of decisive figure that shaped the entire course of American law, like John Marshall did, or even some kind of "landmark" judicial appointment, like Sandra Day O'Connor being the "first female justice" after 192 years of a male-only SCOTUS.

Even her most fervent fans on the internet admit they consider her a "hero" because they agree with her marxist worldview, not because of anything particularly outstanding she did in her career. As the article notes, Justice Scalia was her ideological opposite, and he DIDN'T get the honor of "Laying in state" at the Capitol building -- they had him Laying in Repose at the Supreme Court building, which is a typical honor of Supreme Court justices who pass away.

The equivalent on our side would be conservatives demanding that Jesse Helms or William Rehnquist get to "Lay in state" and be honored on the level of George Washington, just because we liked the way they voted.

I wonder who proposes what individuals get to "Lay in state", and who exactly signed off on it. Seems like pointless pandering to the left so they can make a big spectacle of it in an election year.

So you people realize how bad it looks when you bury someone who is still alive because of political hatred. Good lord.

Architect of the Capitol website says Parks indeed “laid in Honor” not “state”. It seems it’s only a difference in terminology in whether the person was a private citizen or not. I’m sure many media reported Parks “Laid in state”.

https://www.aoc.gov/what-we-do/programs-ceremonies/lying-in-state-honor

Yes, Scalia deserved it. GOP Congress should have done it. Both houses must approve with a concurrent resolution.

Of course RBG doesn’t deserve it though we can’t have the Senate block it without looking petty, if we had the House 100% we don’t do but they have the House so nuts. The important thing is we fill the seat. I think I threw a fit over John Lewis but honestly I couldn’t give a damn at this point. Let them worship her, it’s all they can do.
