What genius decided that Jimi opening for the Monkees was a good idea? LOL.

Jimi Hendrix the greatest guitarist? Santana might disagree.

Micky Dolenz came up with the seemingly bizarre idea to hire Hendrix as the opening act for the Monkees

Kudos to Dolenz for his good taste in music, however. I wish I was old enough to have caught Hendrix live, whether opening for the Monkees or anywhere else.

Forgot about that. Clash of music there. Probably like The Partridge Family and Lynard Skynard double bill?

Hey, Jimi Hendrix died the same way George Floyd did!

Yeah, I heard about this.

Pete Townsend of The Who absolutely did not want to follow Jimi at Monterey Pop, the concert that changed rock and roll.

The Monkees concert I went to had Weird Al Yankovic as their opening act, a much better music/humor combination.

And Mike Nesmith was a big fan of Frank Zappa who appeared briefly on the show.

I remember when Z Z Top was the opening band for Billy Bob Thornton’s band at Billy Bob’s Texas in Fort Worth. I seemed so darned wrong.

Have a listen to Side C of Electric Ladyland. Best guitarist. Best composer. Best ear tuned to the key of C for Cosmos. Then listen to Voodoo Child. Plenty of great guitar players, I love most of them. There’s only one Hendrix like there’s only one Beethoven

I don’t know who’s the best, but my random Top 5 is Jimi, Eddie, Stevie, Carlos, and Eric.

[declared] by Rolling Stone as the greatest guitarist of all time.

I guess these a$$holes never heard of Andrés Segovia.

I think Showtime did a documentary on Hendrix. The had film of Hendrix opening for the Monkees. It was hilarious to see the little boy dressed in their best accompanied by their mothers to a Monkees concert listening to Hendrix. To say they were dumbfounded is to put it mildly.

Also, if I remember correctly, according to the same documentary, it was Hendrix’s manager’s idea for him to tour with the Monkees, not Dolan’s.

I went to an Oingo Boingo concert after they just put out their quasi-funk album "Good for the Soul".

The opening act that was almost booed off the stage?

Red Hot Chili Peppers

...and yes I was one of the people booing the loudest!

Ritchie Blackmore should be in the conversation of the greatest guitarists.

My list would be:Terry Kath, Jimi Hendrix, Ritchie Blackmore, Eric Clapton and Prince.

A lot of listeners equate greatest guitarists with somebody whose style of guitar playing and whose music they like.

I liked some of Jimi Hendrix stuff. But regardless of his skill he produced a lot of noise and a lot of jamming that just didn’t go anywhere. And playing with his teeth? who gives a damn?

Some of my favorite guitarists, all of which are top notch. Which one is better or best? Lot of times it just depends on what I’m in the mood to listen to. What style.

Rory Gallagher
Alvin Lee
Jim McCarty (Cactus)
Clem Clemson (Humble Pie)
John Cipollina (Quicksilver Messenger Service)
Duane Allman
Dickey Betts
Glen Campbell ought to be on any virtuoso guitarist list
And here is one that most people wouldn’t think to put in this list, Leo Kottke, magical fingers.
