Editorial: The Union Movement; AFFAIRS AT THE NATIONAL CAPITAL; THE PRINCE AT NIAGARA (9/18/1860)
New York Times - Times Machine ^ | 9/18/1860

Pursuant to the established policy of the TIMES in giving a fair and impartial representation of the various contending parties before the people, we surrender a large portion of this morning's issue to the cause of Messrs. BELL and EVERETT. Much of this ocean of oratory was discharged last evening at the Cooper Institute, where there was an unprecedented rally of over-zealous friends of the Union and Constitution, to be instructed and strengthened by the exhortations of various partisan evangelists. The occasion was well improved. The addresses deserve the praise of producing some new and highly satisfactory variations upon that exhausted theme, Union-saving. Mayor WOOD, for example, placed before the eyes of the dazzled audience the figure of Commerce, surrounding it with a blaze of rhetorical and statistical fire-works, and traits of thorough reading, that must have misled an unprepared auditor into the belief that his Honor really knew something of the profound subject he was rashly discussing. No mistake could have been greater. The Mayor merely exalted the pecuniary goddess, to show in what constant danger she stood, environed as she is by the clamor of parties, and imperiled by thick-vollied threats of disunion. To appreciate the masterly facility with which Mayor WOOD handles these weighty matters, we need only refer to his statement that England borrowed free-trade from America; and, beaten in competition for the world's trade, she now looks to the event of the actual Presidential canvass, in the eager hope of seeing the Union dissevered and our commerce annihilated.

I don't normally reveal stuff that hasn't happened yet, but I will make an exception just for this instance.

Later this month someone will announce in the pages of the NYT the development of a new kind of motor. It is said to be 80% cheaper than steam and yet more effective than steam. It can be used to power everything from ships at sea to sewing machines, washing machines, churns, and even rocking cradles. The nature of this new motive force must remain a mystery for now but the author of the announcement promises to reveal the particulars at a later time.

My goodness... Mayor Wood seems a lot like the current NYC mayor -- er... I mean one of 160 years in the future... ;-)
I only mean that Wood seems a little scatter-brained, not that he'd actually wish to destroy his own city.
When the secession crisis comes (says my crystal ball), Wood will actually try to join in seceding!
