Dear MarketWatch,
I have five years until I retire. I have a nest egg of $1 million and will also have a monthly military pension of approximately $6,000, and Social Security on top of that.
I like cycling 60 miles a day and want to retire in a place that is known for good, safe cycling. I hate hot humid weather and dont want a lot of snow. I love craft beer. And I would prefer a place with limited or no income tax on a military pension.
Where should I retire? Fort Collins, Colorado, and Asheville, N.C., seem like good places, but the cost of living in Fort Collins seems above average, and I am told Asheville has a lack of housing.
What other places should I consider and how do they compare with the two locations already mentioned? My wife likes the sound of the Hill County in Texas, but she knows the heat is bad.
Dear Charles,
The Fort Collins and Asheville areas sound lovely. And popular places tend to be more expensive thats just the reality of supply and demand. If thats where you want to be, the trade-off might be as simple as a smaller house/condo/rental.
You also could seek cheaper housing a bit further from these two cities Greeley, Colo. (dont believe everything about the smell), or Hendersonville, N.C. (recommended here), for example. Or what about Raleigh-Durham, with the American Tobacco Trail as the trail networks spine? Youd have to accept more humidity with that one, however.
I started my search by looking at the League of American Bicyclists bicycle-friendly communities. Five, including Fort Collins, are platinum. Housing in only one is cheaper than Fort Collins, but I dont think youll appreciate the snow in Madison, Wis. I ruled out Davis, Calif.,

Do not overlook coastal Florida, especially SW Florida such as Naples, Sarasota, and places in between. The sea breeze makes the heat and humidity tolerable, it never snows, and the State of Florida has no income tax and is retiree friendly with many retired military. As for biking, Florida offers four season recreation.
denmark, netherlands or czechia outside prague
I would find a nice small town in Idaho, if you want to go out of the country I would go to Spain the cost of living is VERY LOW and the healthcare system is great it is also beautiful there beautiful oceans everywhere!!
Southern Germany.
Not as bike friendly as it could be but better than some places, Guam. The cost of living is bit high but good veteran hospital and glorious weather year round.
Check out Jekyll Island / St Simons Island GA area. If U like coastal living - and mega bike trails - all zero elevation of course.
Bogus question.
How do I know?
Because I'm the CEO of a Fortune-500 company, will be retiring next year, and want to know where I could settle that has a good "Denny's" restaurant nearby because I just can't get enough of their "Grand Slams."
Regards,
Clark County, Washington. Has dedicated bike/Walking trails. You can also bike across the 205 Bridge on a dedicated bike lane that is protected with concrete barriers on each side. Once you cross, you have options. There is a dedicated bike trail that goes to Salem, OR; and maybe farther. There is also a dedicated bike trail that goes up the Columbia River Gorge.
Vancouver/Clark County has the Burnt Bridge trail that is faiy long.
I also know a great CPA in the area.
Also, Oregon has an annual tour of Oregon ike ride event. There is also the STP ride; a one or two day ride from Seattle to Portland.
Makes for a nice bike ride :-)
Bavaria!
Here the beer is the best in the world and plentiful and so, God help us, are the pestilential bicyclists.
They take taxes out of military retirement. Silly right? But they do.
LOL!
Western Colorado Mesa County.
Bavaria of course.
Why live in a city there are far more rural places that fit the bill

We also have one of the few equestrian trails Named the
Berry man trail. It’s long enough to be able to camp out overnight. Our weather is generally mild not too many hot days and not too many freezing days. Rain is plentiful most months. Property south of St. Louis about 80 miles is inexpensive, and lots of game such as deer, turkey, and quail.
People who draw a public pension aren’t taxed like teachers for example, so Military pension might not be taxed either.
We still have places out in the stix, if you want isolated area and small towns from 200 to 100000.
Our county basically has almost zero zoning laws, you can generally be free to do what you want.
Key West or Hawaii... The only two sensible choices and they’re both military friendly.
Chili, the wx is nice like California without the wackos.
“$6,000 a month in retirement, and its likely not taxable”
It’s 1099 taxable. Just like social security is taxable. If there is a VA compensation that is not taxed.
