PREAKNESS: NO MORE “MARYLAND, MY MARYLAND”
Racing Biz ^ | September 10, 2020 | Frank Vespe

Posted on 09/10/2020 6:29:33 PM PDT by ConservativeStatement

"Maryland, My Maryland” remains – controversially – Maryland’s state song. But it won’t be heard this Preakness day – or likely ever again at Pimlico – snapping a tradition that dated back to 1909.

A company spokesperson confirmed the move September 10.

The Maryland Jockey Club’s decision to ditch the song came as part of the company’s, and the nation’s, reckoning with issues of race and racism that have come to the fore this year following the death of George Floyd, a Minneapolis man killed by police.

Yup. We were basically a highly southern state. Written by a native, in LA at the time of the “Baltimore riots” on Fed troops.

I have zero problem with it. ;-)

I am seething over the betrayal even by my beloved horse-racing.

I checked it out the other week and found astronaut (whom I generally respect) has allowed his tracks to bow to BLM and white-shame us.

I didn’t watch one thing of Derby, and it wasn’t because COVID screwed up the schedule.

Same with my native Preakness. They can KMA.

I will be composing a nice letter to the MJC before long.

It’s funny how so many including commie libs, mock Catholics for being “guilt-ridden”.

That is EXACTLY what liberals want us to do. Constantly feel guilty and self-flagellate.

It’s not the state name, but the state song.

Its not just the name and unless you're Northern scum its still not really a heart-lifting composition.

First, I'd never heard of it as an issue so I report - you decide. ;-)

Maryland, My Maryland

by James Ryder Randall

I

The despot's heel is on thy shore, Maryland! His torch is at thy temple door, Maryland! Avenge the patriotic gore That flecked the streets of Baltimore, And be the battle queen of yore, Maryland! My Maryland!

II

Hark to an exiled son's appeal, Maryland! My mother State! to thee I kneel, Maryland! For life and death, for woe and weal, Thy peerless chivalry reveal, And gird thy beauteous limbs with steel, Maryland! My Maryland!

III

Thou wilt not cower in the dust, Maryland! Thy beaming sword shall never rust, Maryland! Remember Carroll's sacred trust, Remember Howard's warlike thrust,- And all thy slumberers with the just, Maryland! My Maryland!

IV

Come! 'tis the red dawn of the day, Maryland! Come with thy panoplied array, Maryland! With Ringgold's spirit for the fray, With Watson's blood at Monterey, With fearless Lowe and dashing May, Maryland! My Maryland!

V

Come! for thy shield is bright and strong, Maryland! Come! for thy dalliance does thee wrong, Maryland! Come to thine own anointed throng, Stalking with Liberty along, And chaunt thy dauntless slogan song, Maryland! My Maryland!

VI

Dear Mother! burst the tyrant's chain, Maryland! Virginia should not call in vain, Maryland! She meets her sisters on the plain- "Sic semper!" 'tis the proud refrain That baffles minions back again, Maryland! Arise in majesty again, Maryland! My Maryland!

VII

I see the blush upon thy cheek, Maryland! For thou wast ever bravely meek, Maryland! But lo! there surges forth a shriek, From hill to hill, from creek to creek- Potomac calls to Chesapeake, Maryland! My Maryland!

VIII

Thou wilt not yield the Vandal toll, Maryland! Thou wilt not crook to his control, Maryland! Better the fire upon thee roll, Better the blade, the shot, the bowl, Than crucifixion of the soul, Maryland! My Maryland! IX

I hear the distant thunder-hum, Maryland! The Old Line's bugle, fife, and drum, Maryland! She is not dead, nor deaf, nor dumb- Huzza! she spurns the Northern scum! She breathes! she burns! she'll come! she'll come! Maryland! My Maryland!

What in the world is wrong with “Maryland, My Maryland” ?
........................................................
The “woke” crowd is offended by some of the lyrics and the intimidated wimps with the power to do so killed the singing of that beautiful state song. Disgusting isn’t it?

There won’t be any fans in the stands, just like the Kentucky Derby. I watched the Derby from my home just a few miles from the track and seeing the mostly empty stands hurt like hell.

OK, here's a long post with all the lyrics. It's a martial song about written during the Civil War by a southerner. The leftists don't like it because it's a pro-South song. Or maybe the leftists don't like the verses that talk about crushing the tyrant and "sic semper" since they want to destroy the representative Republic and install tyrant communists. Can't have anybody talking against tyranny when that's what they are working to implement here.

"Maryland, My Maryland" was adopted as the State song in 1939 (Chapter 451, Acts of 1939; Code General Provisions Article, sec. 7-318).

The nine-stanza poem, "Maryland, My Maryland," was written by James Ryder Randall in April 1861. A native of Maryland, Randall was teaching in Louisiana in the early days of the Civil War, and he was outraged at the news of Union troops being marched through Baltimore. The poem articulated Randall's Confederate sympathies. Set to the traditional tune of "Lauriger Horatius" ("O, Tannenbaum"), the song achieved wide popularity in Maryland and throughout the South.

Maryland, My Maryland

I
The despot's heel is on thy shore,
Maryland!
His torch is at thy temple door,
Maryland!
Avenge the patriotic gore
That flecked the streets of Baltimore,
And be the battle queen of yore,
Maryland! My Maryland!

II
Hark to an exiled son's appeal,
Maryland!
My Mother State! to thee I kneel,
Maryland!
For life or death, for woe or weal,
Thy peerless chivalry reveal,
And gird thy beauteous limbs with steel,
Maryland! My Maryland!

III
Thou wilt not cower in the dust,
Maryland!
Thy beaming sword shall never rust,
Maryland!
Remember Carroll's sacred trust,
Remember Howard's warlike thrust,-
And all thy slumberers with the just,
Maryland! My Maryland!

IV
Come! 'tis the red dawn of the day,
Maryland!
Come with thy panoplied array,
Maryland!
With Ringgold's spirit for the fray,
With Watson's blood at Monterey,
With fearless Lowe and dashing May,
Maryland! My Maryland!

V
Come! for thy shield is bright and strong,
Maryland!
Come! for thy dalliance does thee wrong,
Maryland!
Come to thine own anointed throng,
Stalking with Liberty along,
And sing thy dauntless slogan song,
Maryland! My Maryland!

VI
Dear Mother! burst the tyrant's chain,
Maryland!
Virginia should not call in vain,
Maryland!
She meets her sisters on the plain-
Sic semper! 'tis the proud refrain
That baffles minions back amain,
Maryland!
Arise in majesty again,
Maryland! My Maryland!

VII
I see the blush upon thy cheek,
Maryland!
For thou wast ever bravely meek,
Maryland!
But lo! there surges forth a shriek,
From hill to hill, from creek to creek,
Potomac calls to Chesapeake,
Maryland! My Maryland!

VIII
Thou wilt not yield the Vandal toll,
Maryland!
Thou wilt not crook to his control,
Maryland!
Better the fire upon thee roll, Better the shot, the blade, the bowl,
Than crucifixion of the Soul,
Maryland! My Maryland!

IX
I hear the distant thunder-hum,
Maryland!
The Old Line bugle, fife, and drum,
Maryland!
She is not dead, nor deaf, nor dumb-
Huzza! She spurns the Northern scum!
She breathes! She burns! She'll come! She'll come!
Maryland! My Maryland!

I’m guessing it was the “Northern Scum” line they didn’t like, as it expressed a southern confederacy therefore pro-slavery point of view.

I thought that, too. But then I read the history of the song — then entire song is very pro-Southern which is (obviously) pro-slavery.

It is disgusting, "Maryland, My Maryland" at Pimlico is as much part of horse racing culture as "My Old Kentucky Home" is at the Kentucky Derby.

Everything is being destroyed. I really think we are not far from a shooting war. I don't know what the spark will be, but it's coming soon.
