Al Sharpton blasted the “Defund the Police” movement on Tuesday, describing the notion of eliminating law enforcement a “latte liberal” fantasy.
Sharpton, a Democrat, is the latest high-profile leftist to switch sides from calls to “Defund the Police.”
Sharpton’s remarks come after Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden refused to endorse the movement as he scrambles to distance himself from anti-police brutality protests, due to diminishing polls.
Sharpton appeared on MSNBC to comment on New York City’s exploding gun crime under Mayor Bill de Blasio’s watch.
“We’ve always heard about the tale of two cities. On the side of the city that I come from, which is Blacker and poorer, we’ve seen more in terms of gun usage,” Sharpton said.
“I got a lot of attention when I did the eulogy for George Floyd’s funeral, but I also, a month later, preached a 1-year-old kid’s funeral in Brooklyn who was killed by a stray bullet,” Sharpton added.

“So I would say statistically we’re not much higher than where we were, but on the ground, it is certainly feeling more violent, feeling more unsafe in unsafe communities.”

This is ironic. Sharpton is a race-hustler and opportunist who always swoops in at the drop of his own hat to declare some incident was “racist” and he lines is own pocket.

Sharpton also knows his constituency and is likely sensing that there is not overwhelming condemnation of the police in the inner-cities that are now exploding with gang violence. In other words, Sharpton is indirectly admitting what many of us have recognized from the beginning (Ferguson Effect) - the “cure” is far worse than the problem.
