Military retirees and families are getting new IDs

Military retirees and families are getting new IDs for the first time in three decades.

The Defense Department is replacing its 30-year-old identification cards for military families, retirees, and civilian workers in an effort to upgrade the cards and avoid security risks.

The Defense Department began issuing the new IDs in July and some are already in circulation. But Michael Sorrento, director of the Defense Manpower Data Center, said cardholders don’t have to scramble for the new IDs. In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, he said he doesn’t want ID facilities jam-packed with people, so the old cards do not need to be replaced until they expire or the phase-out date in January 2026.

However, only about 20 sites now issue the new cards due to the equipment required to make them. But all ID sites worldwide will likely have the new equipment by the end of the year, according to a Defense Department news release.

Just wait a couple of years and get a new one. If you have a spouse, that ID lasts only 3 years, you can both go in and get the new one then. I’m taking my wife in to get her ID card renewed next week, but she’ll probably get the ‘old’ one as I doubt if the Indiana National Guard Armory nears us is one of the “20 locations” currently issuing them. I’ll get my Indefinite Card replaced when we have to renew hers in 3 years.

I got a new military ID 5 years ago and it was different than the one that was replaced in that it doesn’t have my SSN on it. Instead, it has an ID number of some sort.

Why is a Social Security card that should be used for 60+ years still made of thick paper?

I had to get a new one 5 years ago when I turned 65. The new one had changed the ID# from SSN to a unique DoD ID#. Something I had not had on my ID since early 72 when they changed from my original service # to SSN.

It will be interesting to see what this one looks like, but, no hurry, especially with the scamdemic mask mania still going on.

I’m guessing it is because of the disclaimer “not to be used for identification” that is, or at least was, printed on it.

A couple of years ago I had to get a new CAC Card type retired ID because of a change over in ID cards required to get on military bases. And like you, it had a unique DoD ID number that replaced the SSN as well as a chip, barcode and magnetic strip. With it, when I go through the base gate the guard scans the barcode and it gives him a code that verifies the validity of the card and my authorization for access.

Hey, my wife and I just got ours last month and it is still the old style; even though, we got them at one of the largest bases in the states. You would think they would have had the new style up and running. Didn’t hear about this until afterwards. Rats!

This will be the 3rd time for me.

I retired in 1998. Card did not expire.

Sometime, around 2017, they said we had to get new cards due to SSAN bring on the old ones.

In this instance, I was never told. I don’t go on base/post much anymore, and was refused entry! So I went to pass and ID, got a temporary pass and went to the CBPO (or whatever it is called now) to get a new one. Then I found out I, as a lower-valued retiree, had to make an appointment, because you just can’t go to the help desk and get help unless you’re active duty. I didn’t know this, either. No kidding! I went there (not knowing the new rule), signed in. No one ahead of me. Waited 5 minutes, and an airman told me that since I was a retiree he could NOT take me without an appointment. I said, Airman, there’s no one here beside me. He said, din’t matter—you are a retiree. I then spoke to a SSgt who said the same. Not wanting to be a Karen, I did not ask to speak to the Chief, so I made an appointment. So I got to get new one ID Card after several weeks.

Now I’ll have to do it again. I won’t put it off till 2026, if I’m still alive, I’ll make an appointment.

I haven’t been on a military base/post in over 20 years. Do they still issue window decals for cars, or do they just check your ID?

The DoD stopped issuing decals about 10 years ago. Now they only use the ID card. If you have a 20 year old retired ID card you need to get a new one to get on base. I recommend checking with a nearby National Guard or Reserve armory about where you can get a new retired ID. My local Armory couldn’t do it and they referred me to the “big” armory that held several companies, ARNG & Army Reserve, and had the battalion HQ. I called ahead and made an appointment without a problem. And didn’t need to show my ID card to get inside.
