Utah Gov. Gary Herbert has no sympathy for parents objecting to his edict that children attending school either wear masks or face possible criminal charges.
Herbert issued the mask mandate, for grades K-12, in July. The reopening of Utahs public schools has drawn new attention to the edict, which calls for a maximum punishment of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine for showing up without one. The order applies equally to adults and children, and any charge would be a misdemeanor.
Herbert said Thursday that parents opposed to his order are a little bit irrational, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.
I think these same people might get on an airplane and say theyre not going to fasten their seat belts, he said. And they may be invited to get off the plane if thats the case.
Anna Lehnardt, a spokeswoman for Herbert, said school officials will decide if they want to make compliance a criminal issue, according to the Salt Lake City newspaper.
Its enforced on a district and superintendent level, she said. But were not thinking, Lets slap a bunch of kids with misdemeanors.

Will black kids be fined? How about muslim kids? How about illegal immigrant kids?
Agreed. This is after people were saying take police out of schools and stop arresting kids for fights and tantrums.
Is Utah one of the states where you don’t have to inform your sexual partner, if you have AIDS?
How does one open a school at the same time saying a simple slip of your non-protective mask will have you fined? This is about enforcing tyranny, not protection.
Well.... we all know who’ll be paying the fines and it won’t be the kids.
I love the image of six-year-olds behind bars. Should do a lot to get him re-elected.
It is not against the law not to wear a damn mask anyway. No State Legislature has enacted a statute making it mandatory
to wear a mask, even thousands who cant wait to be slaves wish they would.
