Uber and Lyft are preparing to suspend their ride-hailing services in California beginning on Friday morning unless an appeals court rules at the last minute they cannot be forced to treat their drivers as employees, rather than independent contractors.

Lyft in a blog post on Thursday said it would suspend its California operations at midnight. Uber in a blog post said it would have to temporarily shut down unless the appeals court intervenes.

California, the state so progressive that they can’t even keep the lights on...

This truly is the Uberpocaplypse. It will cause massive job losses, and kill already struggling restraints. And it could be the final straw to turning a California Ref.

This will affect millions in California.

This is much bigger than California. This is going to happen in the entire United States if we lose the Senate and Biden is elected. This is all about organized unions trying to take over.

What you don’t get is that this has bigger implications if the Democrats would win the Senate, and the presidency. It would be the first thing they would put into affect nationwide. January 2020 Congress passed the following bill. But since there’s a Republican Senate it went nowhere.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill on Thursday that effectively would nationalize the provisions within California’s AB5 law, which severely constricts the ability of companies to hire independent contractors.

The Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, introduced in Congress last year, expands the definition of “employee” and “employer” to discourage the classification of workers as independent contractors, with language that mirrors the three-pronged “ABC” test in AB5 to determine independent contractor status. An amendment attached to the bill clarifies that its ABC test “does not preempt any state laws governing the wages, work hours, workers’ compensation, or unemployment insurance of employees.”

The legislation was approved along party lines in the Democrat-controlled House. The bill has a much more difficult road in the Republican-majority U.S. Senate, however, where it is not expected to pass. “It’s a messaging bill that has no chance of passing” in the Senate, said Rep. Rodney Davis, R-Ill., in opposing the bill on the House floor.

I don’t understand why CA would be singling out this industry. Many companies use contractors to supplement employees and they should be allowed to staff as they see fit.

It’s long past time for some business to decide that it’s not worth the hassle of operating in California.

Can't speak for other cities/states but it was only a few years ago that a NYC taxi medallion went for a million dollars.I don't know what kind of lobbying capabilities they have in state capitals or in DC but you can be sure that they're not thrilled to see the rise of Uber.

Here in Pennsylvania the taxi cab medallion people lost that battle.

Democrat politicians decided they coveted the votes of Uber-loving Millenials more than graft and kickbacks from the cab operators.

Given who those people are I honestly thought we’d see more politicians’ heads turning-up in rivers.

Pesonally, I prefer the security of a real cab driver over a driver who doesn’t necessarily know where I want to go/s

The “real” cab drivers don’t necessarily know where you want to go either.

Most are right off the boat from Afghanistan or Zimbabwe or someplace. Remember the old comic’s line, “Welcome to Washington, D.C., where both you and your cab driver will be seeing the city for the first time!”

Declaring this the Uberpocalypse is like calling the the Wuhan Flu a “problem for tanning parlors.”

This is not just about the employers, either.

The gig economy is about the individual who chooses to work as a contractor, master of his own fate.

This includes writers, IT consultants, nurses, all kinds of creative and professional/skilled trades, etc.

I mean, I can’t think of any skill/profession that does NOT have people who are independent contractors.

CA even tried to take down CDL Owner Operators, but the FMCA stopped that I think.

Yeah, it’s about Door Dash /sarc

A LOT of young people use Uber and Lyft — no more need for a designated driver, for one thing — but the tyrant Gavin Newsom won’t let anyone go anywhere and do anything anyway. Keep votin’ Demwit, you young nitwits!

I don’t understand why CA would be singling out this industry. Many companies use contractors to supplement employees and they should be allowed to staff as they see fit.

It did not target just these companies... The law applies to all industries who use "Contract Employees" (the "Gig" economy). Too hard to collect taxes from individuals so, just mandate that they are all employees and concentrate on the bigger fish!

“I don’t understand why CA would be singling out this industry. “

they’re not: the legislation applies to ALL independent contractors, including musicians, bands, freight haulers, plumbers, barbers, hair-stylists, and millions more ...

What about DoorDash and Uber Eats?

The Judge's decision applies to Uber and Lyft. Uber Eats and PostMates are part of Uber, so they fall under this order. Clearly DoorDash, Instacart and others now fall under this law, but they will likely ignore it until they are forced to comply.

There is a ballot measure in November to exempt them, so we will see if the voters really want to shut them down.
