Mystery gas discovered near center of Milky Way

An international team of researchers have discovered a dense, cold gas that's been shot out from the center of the Milky Way "like bullets".

Exactly how the gas has been ejected is still a mystery, but the research team, including Professor Naomi McClure-Griffiths from The Australian National University (ANU), say their findings could have important implications for the future of our galaxy.

The study also raises new questions about what's happening in our galactic center right now.

The center of the Milky Way is home to a massive black hole, but it's unclear whether this black hole has expelled the gas, or whether it was blown by the thousands of massive stars at the center of the galaxy.

The research has been published in the journal Nature.

The gas was observed using the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX) operated by the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Chile.

Methane is real stinky stuff.

Methane is a colorless, odorless gas.

The storm burst upon us six years ago now. As Mars approached opposition, Lavelle of Java set the wires of the astronomical exchange palpitating with the amazing intelligence of a huge outbreak of incandescent gas upon the planet. It had occurred towards midnight of the twelfth; and the spectroscope, to which he had at once resorted, indicated a mass of flaming gas, chiefly hydrogen, moving with an enormous velocity towards this earth. This jet of fire had become invisible about a quarter past twelve. He compared it to a colossal puff of flame suddenly and violently squirted out of the planet, “as flaming gases rushed out of a gun.”

Wells never gets old, does he?

Haven’t noticed it lately though. Weird.

It should be up most of the night this time of year. What kind of light pollution do you have in your area? It’s enough in my area that I have to drive about 30 minutes out of town to get a good look at it.

Since we're talking about black holes, we need some appropriate music.

Light pollution isn't a problem where I live.

My back yard faces due east and the Atlantic is just about eight miles from my back yard. Getting a nice view of Jupiter right now and I got home about an hour ago and getting out of my car I happened to look up and there's Cassiopeia. But I haven't seen the little wisp of the spiral arm .
