Robot Trucks Will Soon Screw Up The U.S.A. (And Nobody's Talking About It)

While this column isn't about the threat posed by Transformers, it is about a robot apocalypse that's going to ravage the Midwest. I know, I know, the last thing you want to hear about right now is another imminent doomsday -- aren't global warming and COVID-19 and murder hornets and measles and the ever-present specter of thermonuclear war and the possibility of hyper-intelligent toilet lampreys enough?

Well, it's likely you haven't heard too much about this particular apocalypse because it's not a sexy blood-and-guts kind. Instead of armies of Terminators hunting down handfuls of survivors for their sweet sweet spinal fluid, it'll look like this:

AHHHHHHHH!

Driverless semis.

The cast is a time capsule of a whole slew of actors yet to hit the big time. Sean Connery, Patrick MacGoohan (sp), Stanley Baker, Herbert Lom a very young Jill Ireland, and even David MacCallum who would marry her then lose her to Charles Bronson after the movie The Great Escape.

I’d take all of them over the so called talent of today.

BJ and the bear was good light hearted fare.

Sheriff Lobo was better.

While they won’t be perfect, they will likely be better than human drivers.

And with each mistake the programming and hardware will get reviewed and improved until they are far better than human drivers.

The biggest issue will likely be human drivers making a mistake and trying to blame it on the self driven truck.

They were, no question.

I’ve enjoyed rediscovering The Saint. All of those people were better than today’s crowd.

autonomous trucks won’t be able to handle things once off the interstate.

Or hijackers. I can see defeating a truck’s electronics and activating the air brake system. Truck comes to a halt.

Robots don’t unionize or go on strike. Robots don’t demand health insurance. Robots increase profits. I’m all for it.

I work with companies doing this...the “off the interstate” isn’t the problem domain. You can have truck hubs where a real driver picks up a load to handle the last few miles. The 2000 freeway miles it took to get it there can be done, and soon. Most likely, we’ll first see truck “platooning” where there is a lead driver, followed by other trucks without one.

It isn’t far away.

How will these robot trucks react to being stopped by a Texas DPS Weight Man or a municipal Highway Safety Officer for a road side inspection?

Will the these trucks be able to drive onto the portable bathroom scales for a axle weight check?

Any safety violation has always gone to the driver.

How is the truck going to deal with weather conditions like high crosswinds and ice?
