Ireland eyed for potential 'charter city' for millions fleeing Hong Kong: report

Ireland is being considered as a possible location for an “international charter city” to be developed in anticipation of a mass exodus of Hong Kongers fleeing China’s tightening grasp on their home.

Ivan Ko, a Hong Kong citizen with decades of experience in real estate and property development, has reportedly been searching for places around the world to build a new version of Hong Kong since China implemented its new national security law in the city. The charter city would be designed to have its own tax regime and regulations, U.K.’s The Telegraph reported.

Last week, the British government outlined a new pathway to U.K. citizenship for up to 3 million eligible Hong Kongers, starting in January 2021. The change in immigration rules allows anyone with a British National Overseas passport and their immediate family members to move to the U.K. to work and study for five years. After that, they will be allowed to apply for settled status and then again for citizenship.

They will not need to have a job before arriving in the U.K. […]

Though the Republic of Ireland is not a part of the U.K., the country remains at the top of Ko’s list for a charter city since it has hosted special economic zones in the past, including the Shannon Free Trade Zone and the International Financial Services Center (IFSC) in Dublin. But plans have not been finalized, as Ireland remains a part of the European Union. Generally, European state aid rules prevent members of the bloc from giving aid to companies not available to their competitors. …

Swap them with the citizens of the PNW since they seem to want communism so much.

Come to America, we need more hard working folks who understand and love freedom!

...

I would like to trade all the Democrats in Hawaii for the Hong Kongers who are productive and want freedom.

South Florida’s very international... maybe some of the Hong Kong folks could create a city there.

Hong Kong was not “returned” to China; it was handed over to the communist regime.

Correct. There was almost nothing there, in one of the great natural ports in the world, before the British took it over in 1843.

Send them all to Haiti. It would be a grand experiment to see if capitalism can b successful among primitive cannibals.

I agree. These are good people and they are not trying to sneak in.

Get off the interstates. Drive the state and county roads. You won't be disappointed. There is more to see in America than you could see in 10 lifetimes. Outside of the urban termite mounds, this is a wonderful country.

“Let them come to California. They are pro-business, and could turn the state around.”

They are buying a lot of Cali homes that are within an hour’s drive from the ocean.

Vancouver, Seattle and Portland used to an option. They might be safer in Hong Kong than Seattle or Portland.

Last but not least, they know how deadly it is to live under the ChiComs, which is why they are leaving and will never vote for socialism.

The High Andes of northern Ecuador were a paradise before the Wuhan Virus hit Guayaquil in the south. The whole country was placed in quarantine.

Ecuador is a cheap place to live, the climate in the Andes is ideal, the currency is the U.S. dollar, and the citizens are very friendly toward U.S. and European immigrants.

How about a development straddling both sides of the Inter-Irish border - some in the EU (Republic of Ireland) and some in the UK (Northern Ireland).

Live in the UK, commute to the office in the EU.
