Ireland eyed for potential 'charter city' for millions fleeing Hong Kong: report

Ireland is being considered as a possible location for an “international charter city” to be developed in anticipation of a mass exodus of Hong Kongers fleeing China’s tightening grasp on their home.

Ivan Ko, a Hong Kong citizen with decades of experience in real estate and property development, has reportedly been searching for places around the world to build a new version of Hong Kong since China implemented its new national security law in the city. The charter city would be designed to have its own tax regime and regulations, U.K.’s The Telegraph reported.

Last week, the British government outlined a new pathway to U.K. citizenship for up to 3 million eligible Hong Kongers, starting in January 2021. The change in immigration rules allows anyone with a British National Overseas passport and their immediate family members to move to the U.K. to work and study for five years. After that, they will be allowed to apply for settled status and then again for citizenship.

They will not need to have a job before arriving in the U.K. […]

Though the Republic of Ireland is not a part of the U.K., the country remains at the top of Ko’s list for a charter city since it has hosted special economic zones in the past, including the Shannon Free Trade Zone and the International Financial Services Center (IFSC) in Dublin. But plans have not been finalized, as Ireland remains a part of the European Union. Generally, European state aid rules prevent members of the bloc from giving aid to companies not available to their competitors. …

That’s going to screw over landless Irish who would see their rents rise to Hong Kong levels.

The last 60 years, the Irish have really gone downhill.

Guess Vancouver is full already?

So make NYC a duty free zone!

Bring the Hong Kongers in.

It’s half Commie now as it is, maybe they will help eradicate the leftovers in The Big Apple.

Let them come to California. They are pro-business, and could turn the state around.

I don’t think there is any place I want to visit in Europe or the US, thanks to liberals.

I once fantasized traveling about in a small SUV around the US or Europe and see all the tourist stuff. I’m not confident that is viable anymore.

Rumors are that lots of Hong Kong money is going into Los Angeles real estate.

Iceland isn’t ruined, but it’s small and really expensive.

I’m still thinking about Austria, Poland, Czech Republic, and Switzerland.

Why not put the whole of the British Isles under Hong Kong business rules? "Make Britain Hong Kong again." would be the slogan.

Then stand back and watch Britain dominate the Euroweenies.

“They are pro-business, and could turn the state around.”

You are delusional. How about a moratorium on immigration?
We have close to 350 million people. Are we going to take in the whole world?
Let them fix their own problems at home.

I’m glad I got to visit in 2000. They were one of the Tigers and many of the successful were using their wealth to fix up old castles. Preserving history and all that.:

“The last 60 years, the Irish have really gone downhill.

60 years ago Ireland was an economic basket case with thousands leaving each year because they couldn’t make a living.
Now living standards are much higher and at various points over the last 20-30 years there was net immigration with many Irish people returning to the country.

Even a lot of the good people in Hong Kong were involved in Finance. Bringing more Financiers into the US is not a good idea for those who favor bizzes that actually make things

And don’t forget the dead Chinese immigrants. When the Brits returned HK to China there was a surge of people moving their relatives remains to Canada. Seems commies don’t respect graveyards much.
