Any deep-water sailor will tell you it is a vert different set of skills to pilot a ship in the deep water ocean and piloting a ship close to shore.

Space is mostly empty with nothing to run in to for millions upon millions of miles.

Enter the gravity well of a planet and I can imagine things get very different.

On the other hand, I would think that an interstellar culture would have sophisticated collision avoidance systems. Then of course every system will have its failures.
