Ford Motor Company has unveiled what is being called a "one-off prototype" electric race car named the Mach-E 1400. The insane vehicle boasts a near 57-kilowatt battery, seven different motors, and 1,400 horsepower.

Three of its motors power the front wheels, with four connected to the rear, providing a stunning 2,300 pounds of downforce.

"Getting behind the wheel of this car has completely changed my perspective on what power and torque can be," professional driver Vaughn Gittin Jr. said.

Ford executives are not planning to sell the car but rather use it as a "test bed for new materials." They are also planning to use it as a proof of concept for the performance of an electric fleet of cars.

🔦 Ford has promised to invest $11.5 billion in electric vehicles through 2022.

Looks like Tesla may have some competition.

BTW, the movie "Ford vs Ferrari" is pretty good if you can deal with Matt Damon playing Carroll Shelby. It worked for me.

"Downforce has nothing to do with horsepower or torque. Rather, it is a function of aerodynamics and speed."

Hmmmm ...

A good movie with a lot of unneeded dramatic licensing. But maybe that worked for the average viewer.

” everything was custom in that old world, all the way down to the paint jobs”

Major mods then were over size tires, cherry bomb and removing the air filter. Maybe pushing the spark advance.

Today, custom wheels are the norm.

Exhaust mods are unlimited.

Modified CAI’s are the norm.

Now special tunes modify shift points, throttle response, spark advance and cam timing.

In the old days, you might have put on a larger carb. Now you put on a larger throttle body.

“Range: 75 miles before needing a recharge”

not much call for “race cars” that can go only 75 miles on in a major race ... well, except maybe drag racers ...

He’s talking about the downforce created by the spoiler.

Obviously. But the author either did a real crappy and fast cut/paste job from another article or a press release OR he doesn't that a clue about anything automotive. It's really hard to tell these days.

I looked at the Ford press release and there is nothing about downforce. In "Inside EVs" I found Mustang Mach-E 1400: Exclusive Chat With Ford's Global Director Of Motorsports which says "Airflow management was also a challenge because they needed to factor in the cooling and aerodynamics, but also to create the tremendous 2,300 lb downforce the team wanted to achieve." But it doesn't say what speed is required to generate this downforce. It's probably in the 160-170 mph range you suggested.

There are some great shop pictures at the "Inside EVs" link, too.

Then I found a Malaysian site with an article Ford Mustang Mach-E 1400 prototype – seven electric motors, 1,400 hp; 1,044 kg of downforce at 256 km/h which provides all the specs. That's 2,300 lbf of downforce (note pound-force, not pound) at 160 mph (the same speed you were saying).

That malfunction has to do with beer, not horsepower, torque, aerodynamics or speed. Unless speed of chugging the beer counts.

Lots of racing is less than 75 miles.

“well, except maybe drag racers ...”

All these oversize golf karts are really, one trick ponys with high acceleration, once. Then back for an hours long charge, after minivans humiliate it on the way.
