NEOWISE of the North (Astronomy Picture of the Day)
APOD.NASA ^ | 17 Jul, 2020 | Bill Peters

Posted on 07/17/2020 6:15:53 PM PDT by MtnClimber

(Comet week continues with northern lights in photo) Explanation: After local midnight on July 14 comet NEOWISE was still above the horizon for Goldenrod, Alberta, Canada, just north of Calgary, planet Earth. In this snapshot it makes for an awesome night with dancing displays of the northern lights. The long-tailed comet and auroral displays are beautiful apparitions in the north these days. Both show the influence of spaceweather and the wind from the Sun. Skygazers have widely welcomed the visitor from the Oort cloud, though C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) is in an orbit that is now taking it out of the inner Solar System.

I’m going to go outside tonight to see what I can. Very dark skies and clear here, but I have a 14,000 foot mountain range blocking the horizon.

It should be just above the horizon now to the NNW direction. It will set below the horizon pretty quickly after sunset.

Give us a couple of constellations where it will be located next to or inside of. Heard it was below Ursa Major (Bear/ Big Dipper) but descriptions were as cloudy as our skies are now.

Somebody use the bottom star in the Big Dipper’s handle thru to Arcturus (the large red star that is found by going out from the handle’s bottom star.

To the naked eye, it was just a smudge in the sky and very difficult to see.

With a decent pair of binoculars it was “fascinating” as my daughter said.

Nice view tonight here in NE NC. Used “averted vision” technique to initially find it at dusk, but now it is easily visible betow Big Dipper.

It has been too cloudt here in the Colorado Rockies. I will look from the deck in a few minutes to see if there is a break in the clouds.

The clouds dissipated and I found it directly under the cup of the Big Dipper (Canis Major). Could see it well without binoculars, but better with binoculars. This is the first night it has not been too cloudy. It was almost full cover with high, thin overcast, but it cleared after sunset!
