White people, here’s your racial re-education reading list

I was intrigued by your article but want more information. There is a lot of false info out there about fighting racism and I would welcome some suggestions on things to read. I am a 54-year-old white woman, raised in the lower class in an all-white area. I detest the fact that people are treated differently because of their skin color or ethnic background. I have argued the stupidity of it until I am blue in the face. My problem is that because I grew up in an insular area, I am hesitant to do more simply because I don't know enough. I want to know more. I want to be part of the solution.

This is heartening—and it’s just one among a plethora of similar emails I’ve received from whites looking to know more, to do more, to participate in new dialogues and conversations inspired by this national awakening on racial inequities and injustices.

Call it the racial re-education of white folks.

Many asked how to best engage with that Black co-worker or neighbor they know little about, what social justice organizations they might support with their time and money, how they should talk with their children about race, about George Floyd, police brutality, and reform.

I have a better idea, check out The Night James Brown Saved Boston, about how the hardest working man in show biz kept Boston calm in the aftermath of Dr. Martin Luther King’s assassination.

Toward the end of the show, a young fan jumped onto the stage. A police officer pushed him off. More fans jumped on stage, and more police rushed from the wings. It was a dangerous moment...

James Brown took control. He held the police back. “Move on back. I’ll be all right. I’ll be fine,” he said.

The band went stone silent. More fans leaped onstage, mobbing the singer. “Wait a minute, wait a minute,” Brown repeated. “You make me look very bad, ‘cause I asked the po-lice to step back and you wouldn’t go down. Now that’s wrong, that’s wrong. You’re not being fair to yourself and me and all your race.”

Back in the spotlight, James Brown said, “Now are we together, or are we ain’t?” He told the drummer, “Hit that thing, man,” and picked up where he left off with ‘Can’t stand it, can’t stand your love.’

The show was then rebroadcast, over and over, and thousands of angry young people stayed home.

Of course racism is alive - look at the DNC - but one way to address it, in part, is to watch The Godfather in Soul in action on a night when Boston could have burned, but it didn't...a black mand saved blacks AND whites.

We need more James Browns nowadays.

As a general rule, in today's society people AREN'T treated differently because of race or ethnicity. It is illegal for businesses or government agencies to discriminate on the basis of race or ethnicity, and has been so for decades. (I won't get into the question of affirmative action and other "pro-active" methods of rectifying racial discrimination in the past.)

It is only the left that is clamoring to reinstate segregation and overt racial discrimination.

I’ve been discriminated against a number of times because I’m white, so these idiots can take their stupid anti-white books and stick them where the sun don’t shine.

The “National conversation on race” is one sided. Whiteys are branded racist before they say anything. If they say something, they are fired.
