Has anyone else in the S.E. noticed the paucity of insects this year? By this time any other year we are battling the Mexican Bean Beetles in addition to the usual deer and rabbits. But this year, knock on wood, has been insect free except for a few caterpillars on the young okra.
We did have ALOT of rain this winter, which may have been a blessing in hindsight. It probably also flooded the local coyote den, because the evenings have been unusually quite,

I started more lettuce, yellow squash, parsley, okra and bush beans.
Probably too late and chilly for okra here but might be able to squeeze another crop of the rest in.
I’m going to plant the squash in a brand new are and hopefully they’ll make. I haven’t been able to grow yellow squash in years. Zucchini and cucumbers out the ears but yellow squash drop off before they make.
To most people GOM means Gulf of Mexico.
Here in the Boston area GOM means Gulf of Maine. -Tom

Sorry! It is Gulf of Mexico. I’m so used to abbreviating that. I never thought about it could mean different things to different people.
Thanks for the ping. Nice GIF. I am enjoying the White House tribute to America and the interesting display and history of the airplanes. Nice sunny day-which I have totally taken off from all work or anything resembling work.
BBQ grill has the bottom rusted out-it was a cheap one from Walmart, but has lasted for about 25 years. So I’m researching for a new one. We don’t have a lot of space for a new one.
I want to be able to grill, smoke, bake. I’d like to have capability to use regular wood, charcoal, or propane. LOL I don’t think they make such a thing all in one. I thought about getting a green egg—but they are too expensive, and don’t use regular wood/charcoal.
So today we have purchased already cooked bbq brisket—which means no work, but not nearly as delicious as something fresh off the grill.
Winter Rye has been harvested, and is drying in the green house. Two volunteer tomatoes are about 4 ft. high and have green tomatoes. Hubby’s tomatoes that he started indoors also have green tomatoes. Still hungering for the fresh ripe ones.
Lettuce has bolted. Should have already planted some more in the shade. Corn is about 4.5 foot high. Strong winds blew some it down to a 30 degree angle. So, I used some tomato cages and metal poles to loosely tie them back up.
This is just a small patch of Evergreen Corn. It used to be pulled up-roots and all before maturity, and hung to finish maturing-and providing fresh corn for months. I plan to plant a couple of small patches of corn in the now vacant Rye beds.
One is popcorn with maturity of 70 days. The other is little giant with maturity of 55 days. I’ll plant the popcorn first and then wait a couple of weeks to plant the little giant in the other bed.
Hubby planted a type of corn that is not as tall as usual, and has more than 2 ears per stalk. We’ll see how that goes.
I had some midget melon seeds that I tried to start from 2016, but none of them germinated. So I pitched them at the edge of the compost heap-now I have a bunch of little plants all too close together. Going to have to thin them out. Ha.
Tumeric is looking good—it makes such a spectacular plant. I really hate to harvest it in the fall. It would be so beautiful in a pot indoors-if it would last over the winter-but last year it got so big I really didn’t have room indoors, and it didn’t last the winter in the greenhouse. So I don’t know if it would last indoors or not. So I’ll go a head and harvest most of it-will save the smallest one to bring indoors for the start of next year’s plant.
Basement walls are up for the storage shed/root cellar. Hoping to pour the floor next week. Due to some much needed rain, it was too muddy to do the floor this week. Lumber should be delivered after the floor is finished—we ordered it early enough to avoid the price increases.
Our swimming pool developed a leak, and the water for our garden drained out. We don’t like to use the water from the well for the gardens-so we are at the mercy of the weather this year.

Just the opposite here, we get the yellow summer squash just fine, but Zukes and Cukes are pathetic-last good crop was 2010.

Well, I managed to kill off the Rosemary plant by over-watering. Oops. Now been a good year for that; hence my seedling which were once strong and now are gone.
I watered the Rosemary like everything else - they are all doing well. Oh well, off to Walmart for another Rosemary plant - it’s $2 for a couple of twigs of Rosemary at Sprout’s or Walmart so I might as well buy another $2.97 plant.

We’re in the same zone, so 9-11am watering/gardening each morning is IT these days. The sun hits the West side of my garden around 8am, then creeps East by 11am for full sun until the sun goes down. (Big old Maple tree shades it - the sun DOES rise in the East, even in Iowa County, LOL!)
Today’s project is to pull bolting lettuces, but still leave a few go to seed for FREE Fall seedlings.
The ‘Marvel of Four Seasons’ lettuce is still looking good and hasn’t bolted or turned bitter. Can’t remember who I recommended that to? Dakine or Tob2? Anyhow, it’s doing great. I’ll post pictures later and ping whoever wanted to know about that from last week.
8:17am now, coffee and a hard roll breakfast, then I’m hitting it. :)
