"The US military refused to pay for Madsen's medical bills following the accident, and, in the dispute that followed, Madsen lost her home and her marriage fell apart. She fell into depression and became homeless, living out of a storage locker in Disneyland."

That is an absolutely tragic story. RIP.
How does one live out of a storage locker IN Disneyland?!
What a life story. And she made it almost half way to Hawaii. RIP
Sad. Wonder if she got hung up on something during the bow anchor repair and drowned? I imagine she was tethered to the craft.
so, didn’t Brewer & Shipley write a song about this called “One Row Over The Line, Sweet Jesus?”
Wow, that is a sad story.
I do not understand how our military cannot pay for insurance that would have covered the hospital bills for an accident.
Too bad she got taken in.
Okay. I’ll have a beer for the occasion, because beer seems to be an effective diuretic.

Brought tears to my eyes. She definitely was a warrior.
I do know that whatever my purpose is in this life, my differently-abled, physically-challenged, broken-down, beaten-up body seems to be the vehicle required for me to achieve it. I am purpose driven; I may suffer pain and not walk upright in this life, but when I go home, I will not suffer the walk through the gate. I can live with that. If I could go back and change things, I would not. It would be nice not to have to suffer so much pain but, hey, thats just the way it is. In the beginning, I was angry. But now, I completely understand, Madsen wrote in her memoir Rowing Against the Wind.
Every so often someone comes along and takes upon himself/herself an unbelievable, grueling challenge (e.g., scaling some mountain, walking/rowing/swimming some great distance, etc) and says, “I’m going to do X or die trying.” Unfortunately, the latter outcome occasionally happens.
Something doesn't sound quite right.
Her basketball training session...?
Whut the fluck? You must mean BASIC TRAINING SESSION.
Wikipedia really say what you posted Ben?
Possibly the victim of too many unrealistic hollywood movies.
RIP to an amazing woman who was dealt one of the worst hands by life I’ve ever heard, and lived to the fullest despite that. The “LGBT” thing doesn’t interest me, may be a result of her horrible marriage breakup and subsequent extreme poverty.
“She set a goal of rowing 12 out of every 24 hours for three-four months to complete her journey...”
This seems like a crazy thing to do. RIP.
She got hurt at a Marine Corpse basketball session and they refused to help with her medical bills?! That doesnt make any sense
Maybe I’m a little dense but how does someone with no use of their arms or legs “row” anything? With her teeth? How did anyone believe it was a good idea to try to “row” from L.A. to Honolulu? If she rows 12 hours and rest 12 hours, doesn’t that mean she’s drifting back towards California (or Mexico) the 12 hours she’s resting? This whole idea just doesn’t compute for me. This would be like Diana Nyad crossing the English Channel but giving back 2/3rds of her effort before reaching shore.
I mean, sad for her that she died but didn’t anyone say “maybe you haven’t thought this through”?
for all she went through in her life, i would have hoped she’d pick some thing else useful to society to have done then row across an ocean which seems like a personal goal. i beleive we are on this planet to experience and deal with others in lots of ways whether we want to or not, not just to please ourself.
sad way to go, but maybe God got her attention out there.
Fishy part 2: If a service member is injured requiring hospitalization over 24 hours, a Line of Duty/Misconduct Investigation is assigned to determine if the government is responsible for the injury and any follow-on disabilities. In 99% of those cases, the government is responsible.
The Bullshit Flag is on the field!
