I'm sure (I hope) to get a range of responses to this thread.
I've owned hand guns and long guns of all types. Handling them is not an issue.
Unfortunately the ones I've had were lost in a boating accident.
I'm looking to replace the ones I had with three or four that compliment each other.
The best guns in the world and limitless supply of ammo will be better than nothing but not be worth much in a SHTF situation if you do not understand and apply useful combat strategy
I had a S&W 340PD and would practice with .357 all of the time. Got to be pretty good out to 9yds. Just thinking now the number of rounds isn't good enough and I've never done a speed load.
870 rem or 500 mossberg riot gun, a good quality 9MM pistol that fits your hands well.
Right now you can pick up a long range varmint rifle in .308 of good quality and great off the shelf accuracy for close to 1K$. Plan on putting good money into top glass too. I would look at the appropriate shepherd scope. I believe you would be looking at a P-2 if you are going to shoot 165 Gr bullets. I would also invest in a timney trigger and spend a lot of range time with it. Plan on putting abut $2600 into this rifle. This is your force multiplier so set it up right and learn how to use it and when to use it. There are short weekend classes in long range shooting around, find one and take it.
I would go with a side charge AR platform in 5.56 but try and find a good 18” fluted barrel. Barrel cooling is more important than most people believe.
Just looked now, and all the LE trade-in USP 40s seem to be gone. A shame, but now I feel compelled to find one, lol.
My only motive is to ask the the folks here who also have a wealth of knowledge and ask for their input before I drop $3k - $4k into guns. $4K I could afford ten years ago but maybe not now. Why look into an ulterior motive? Geez, at least you could see how long I've been a member before you start accusing me of some ulterior motive with my question.
If nothing else I think this is a very informational thread.
Funny, not many on this thread have endorsed the .40 but I had a few and enjoyed the caliber. I had a few Glock 10MM and would prefer them but the additional ammo load in the mags for the .40s is something to think of. And I'm sure .40 or 9mm is a LOT cheaper than 10mm right now.
I bought my S&W Mod 28 Highway Patrolman in 1973, carried it on the street till 1981. It became like an extension to my arm. Thousands of rounds thru it, a lot of hand loaded full wadcutters for qualification practice. Nothing fouls like handloaded wadcutters lol.
I still have it, take it out now and then and it feels like old times, every time.
It's a noble chunk of iron.
That's probably what I'll end up doing.
I had a Tokarev that would split sellier & bellot ammo. It was OK to shoot but I dumped it.
You got it. Anything you'd like to actually add to the thread?
Very well.
Every man needs an AR and 1,000 rounds. It’s your patriotic duty. And I mean AR-15. It has the most common magazines in America to share with friends, neighbors and family.
A long shooter, well tuned to hit a watermelon at 500 yds. I like 30.06 due to every sporting goods store having the ammo. Select the ammo the RIFLE likes. Do not select a bullet weight you like...use what the rifle likes. Almost any commercial rifle will shoot <1MOA with the right bullet weight.
9mm pistol. Universal ammunition. Any brand will do.
And a 12 gauge pump for close up defense. Several to choose from, as long as the barrel is less than 20in and capacity is 5+.
If you buy well and have something left over, buy a Marlin model 60 .22 rifle for varmints. And potentially eating.
The USP is a remarkable handgun, though outdated in some ways, but it is the only handgun I know of that was designed from its inception around the .40 S&W, and not one adapted to it from another caliber.
As I said in another post, there used to be, fairly recently, LE USP 40s available for around $350, but those seemed to have disappeared.
Ahhh, forgot about the PS90. Might not be on the budget though. Glock 19 is a good choice though. Not a fan of 9MM but can't beat the capacity.
Wondered when the 50BMG would get mentioned. I'd love one but not in the budget.
Which is why I'm looking for four or five guns that complement each other. Different funcions for different neds.
Late to the party here. I’ve been around, but not professionally like many here. My advice is to pick your calibers first, then general type of fun (bolt, semi, wheel...), then find the guns that fit you well. Rent some.
For ammo, go here:
www.gunbot.net
There is no place like it, hands down. Crude, but scans all the popular places (cabellas, sports!and guide, etc.) every few minutes, and lets you sort by caliber, price per round, case, quantity, etc. I just bought 1000 rds 7.62 x 39 for 26 cents each, free delivery, in stock.
I don’t practice enough, but have found when you’ve mastered the fundamentals, you can pick up most anything cold and shoot it decently immediately. Breathing, trigger (slow press), lean into it, hold firm but not hard, sights, etc. I’m good to 200yds standing, iron sights, with every rifle I’ve tried. And I ain’t special. 500yds prone with a .308 most recent shooters can do after about 50 rds, assuming decent rifle and very good optics. Old rule is spend as much for optics as you did for the rifle. Newer aimpoints are great but take practice rapidly aquiring target, for me anyway. But since I can hit a man size target at 200 yds standing with an AR iron sights, no optics for me that one. Personal preference. Maybe night is different urban? No experience here.
Easier to have maybe 5 ammo types, then pick guns for them, imo. .22, 9mm, either .223 or 7.62x39, .308, 12ga is a good starting point, also imo.
Yup. My favorite guns have felt like a glove. Glocks and S&W always felt very well. Springfields, for whatever reason and NOT A SLAM AGAINST THEM, not so much for me. It's just that for me a pistol has to feel like an extension to my hand.
Ok. Going to compile a bit of info here but right off the top the majority of the long gun calibers lean towards 5.52, .30-06 or .308.
No fans of the 7.62x39. I LOVE that caliber.
What am I missing? I mean .308 or .30-06 in bolt action would be great. But semi?
It’s like TP
Ya never know
anymore, sushi!
Very good recommendations. I already have the 12 gauge Winchester and a Ruger .22. The rest may end up on my list.
