My only motive is to ask the the folks here who also have a wealth of knowledge and ask for their input before I drop $3k - $4k into guns. $4K I could afford ten years ago but maybe not now. Why look into an ulterior motive? Geez, at least you could see how long I've been a member before you start accusing me of some ulterior motive with my question.

Every man needs an AR and 1,000 rounds. It’s your patriotic duty. And I mean AR-15. It has the most common magazines in America to share with friends, neighbors and family.
A long shooter, well tuned to hit a watermelon at 500 yds. I like 30.06 due to every sporting goods store having the ammo. Select the ammo the RIFLE likes. Do not select a bullet weight you like...use what the rifle likes. Almost any commercial rifle will shoot <1MOA with the right bullet weight.
9mm pistol. Universal ammunition. Any brand will do.
And a 12 gauge pump for close up defense. Several to choose from, as long as the barrel is less than 20in and capacity is 5+.
If you buy well and have something left over, buy a Marlin model 60 .22 rifle for varmints. And potentially eating.
