L'Oreal to remove the word 'whitening' from its products

Industry-leading French cosmetics company L'Oreal announced they will be removing words like "whitening" and "lightening" from their products after a number of beauty brands received backlash for their skin-lightening products amidst ongoing protests for racial equality.

"The L'Oreal Group has decided to remove the words white/whitening, fair/fairness, light/lightening from all its skin evening products," the company said in a statement.

The move signals a shift by beauty giants to stand up against racial stereotypes. L'Oreal's skin brightening creams are amongst the most popular on the market and are targeted towards Asian, African and Caribbean buyers who face a cultural stigma where lighter skin is perceived as more desirable.

The insanity started with Michael Jackson. He not only had all the plastic surgery, but had his hair straightened, and his skin bleached (likely hydroquinone) so as to look like a white man/boy/woman. I thought it a shame since he was a good-looking black man.

I have vitiligo (lack of melanin in areas) and had considered using hyroquinone to smooth out my very white spots. Never did it and most just filled in due to my life in the sun. Michael Jackson never showed any signs of vitiligo. I tried to find any photo of him when he first claimed that was his problem with becoming white. Vitiligo does not turn your entire face white over such a short period. It starts in patches - no pics of those patches.

BTW, I believe Prince was much more talented, given his song writing and guitar skills. I wonder what he would be doing today if still alive. Sorry, got off topic.

Actually I have a black background on my NOOK reader; but the print is white, however, there's more black in the background than white lettering so in this case black wins.

I can’t wait to see what Crest and Colgate are going to do with their products to, uh, WHITEN, teeth. I can’t imagine the contortions that they’re going to go through trying to market these products in the future.

Personally, I know that these people will not go away easily, especially because they are just rolling over everyone and a large percentage of companies. Why should they stop behaving badly and demanding insane things when behaving badly and demanding insane things has been so successful for them?
