The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you wont be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
I sprout my peas and beans inside on a cookie sheet between two pieces of paper toweling. Spacing...6”...Rows are just 6” apart, too.
I plant mine in double rows. 6” apart within the row, each row is 6-8” from its partner, but then enough space to walk before the next double row.
If planting in blocks, you can stagger the seeds so they are 6” apart in all directions. Just make sure the block is narrow enough you can still reach the middle.
The 18-30” is so you have room to walk, and if using a tractor you have room for the wheels between rows.
It was perfect timing for that, for me. Kitchen garden was almost needing to watered. Now there's no need.
Good neighbor Dave got my hay field baled on Thursday, and all of it was picked up and put away yesterday.
I started on my bait pond after work on Monday. Finished it after work on Thursday. Seeded the berm with wheat, fescue, and clover yesterday morning.
Gardening by proxy. It qualifies.
We had T-storms yesterday ..... one came through around 2 pm & dumped a good 2 inches of rain! Another storm came through around 6 pm & dumped at least another half inch.
The garden is growing ‘great guns’ with all this rain. Tomatoes, cukes & peppers are flowering. The zinnias are blooming (big fight going on with the Japanese beetles - don’t want to spray anything that would hurt birds/bees/butterflies). A wild flower mix I planted last weekend is coming up. I’m hoping to see some sunflower blooms soon.
My marigold seeds I planted Monday (using 4 4-packs) have been coming up since Thursday - yesterday 14 of 16 were showing. I watered them in with warm water for starters & they’ve been rained on ever since.
Mowing ... needs doing now, more than ever after all the rain, but with more storms forecast & the ground rather sloppy, I might not be able to do it until next week (which means I’ll have a ‘hay field’!). Super humid & with all sopping wet, the afternoon will be spent cooking ahead for a family Father’s Day cookout tomorrow.
Looks awesome. ‘Who’ will be bait?
Always good to see ya
Few can grow 9 foot okra plants
Bluegills, bullheads, shiners, fatheads, carp, chubs, green sunfish, grass shrimp, crayfish, etc.
It’s always tough to keep bait alive in a tank when the outdoor temps are below 40 or above 70.
Once this thing fills with water that problem will be solved.
Lots of commi stuff. I like the cheap ammo. 7.62 by 39 and 9 by 18. All day for half price. One stove pipe but a little tlc and we were back shooting.
I have 2 AR15s. One is older and 1 is newer.
I a going to move move my upper from the new one to the old one. Then get carbine length upper for the new one and put an adjustable stock on the old one.
The old one (Rock River Arms lower) will be handed down to my 19 y.o. when he hits 21 (WA State law or when we move to Texas...whichever comes 1st.
Newer rifle is what I carry in my truck daily in my center console vault.
Making it carbine length is more practical for getting it in and out.
I have an 80% polymer AR10 lower which I need to get around to finishing.
Excellent solution. :)
Greetings from southern New Hampshire. It appears that we are in the midst of a drought. Nothing much to report yet on any vegetable gardening.
We have been bustin hump out in the duck pen. I introduced Household Six to my Challenger .22 pistol and rat shot, and she has been the grim reaper out there. The rat population is down, severely!
I have been supporting Six with the John Deere tractor. Moving some old pavers to our RV site (36 in all), and I am in the midst of laying a nice paver patio between the coop deck and the gateway, with plans now to continue it to our deck before the snow flies.
After the patio is done, I will build a base for our other deck box, and then bring in wood chips to carpet the southwest corner of the pen.
Six has been trimming bushes, and generally cleaning up, rearranging the stream from the bog filter, etc.
With the heat, it has been a real challenge, but we soldier on!
That is horrible.
Well, being a cop, and working in an area taken over by antifa and with politicians who sold us out....I only care about a 911 call right now of a citizen or cop are being killed.
Everything else is on modified response until the people tell the politicians to get their minds right.
Not dying or going to prison for anyone’s politics.
My retirement t date moved from 2030 to 2021 with the actions of 4 city council mwmbers and 1 mayor.
Sorry to hear your community suffered through that.
I feel bad for you guys. Total mess. Makes what should be a rewarding job full of common sense and service a political cluster fk.
I dont blame you for keeping your head down.
Hope it gets better.
Awesome garden space!
Thank God we have it in a city of about 40,000 souls per sq. mile! Providing lots to share, glory to God.
