Column: Why are so many people not wearing masks? Here's how they explain it
LA Times via MSN ^ | 6/17/20 | Steve Lopez

**SNIP**

Last week, Orange County’s public health director resigned after her call for mandatory face masks prompted a death threat, a security detail and a poster of her with a Hitler mustache and swastikas. On Tuesday in Santa Ana, face mask supporters were pushed and mocked by foes who chanted, “Hey hey, ho ho, these masks have got to go.”

**SNIP**

In Glendora, some of the people without face coverings were with relatives, and others were carrying masks in their pockets. But it wasn’t hard to find people who told me they didn’t buy into the argument that masks necessarily limit the spread of the coronavirus.

“It’s probably driven by political scare tactics,” said a 77-year-old retiree strolling with his wife, neither of them wearing masks. He added that he didn’t know anyone who has gotten COVID-19, but if reported cases are up, maybe it’s simply because there’s more testing rather than a worrisome surge.

**SNIP**

And then I came upon Robin and her daughter Natasha, both maskless. Robin said she likes to breathe in the fresh air on a nice day, and they cover up in stores, as required. But they weren't sold on the usefulness of masks. Natasha said even the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has contradicted itself on the matter.

No question, there’s still a lot to learn about the virus, and opinions on masks have varied. But for the record, the CDC currently “recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.”

In my area, about 25% of shoppers don’t wear masks.

That low? Sounds like Heaven/a return to America. There are way too many fear fags down in the valley stores around here. You even see people driving around by themselves wearing masks in their cars. 'Tards, every one of them.

I believe masks are about 90% effective for protection while shopping. What the hell does that even mean?

That poster is named after a cartoon character, and at times his posts really live up to that. An N-95 mask offers one level of protection, a surgical mask another, a homemade t-shirt mask something else again. The virus is apparently small enough to pass through nearly all of them. Yet when our Governor was claiming they were mandatory even a bandana wrapped around your head was acceptable.

Whatever they are about it sure ain't science. IMO a lot of it is about calming the fears of grocery clerks so they'd keep coming to work.

I’m in my 70’s. I have an immune system. I refuse to wear a mask. Some people look at me like I am Typhoid Mary. I had an appointment at our local hospital recently. They required a mask be worn. I wore it down on my beard with my mouth and nose exposed. No one said anything. At least I know who the weak are more readily now. Let them live their lives afraid. Freedom trumps this politically exaggerated wuhan death virus situation. So many are sheeple.

The masks will increase your chance of getting sick. It’s just a visual way for the powers to see who is compliant.

Don’t sit/stand within 6 feet of someone for more than 2-3 minutes. If you stand in line somewhere, keep separated by 6 feet or more

Nope. Unless they're exhibiting systems of the flu, as I have since the "peak" passed two months ago I'm going to continue to shake hands, hug my old friends, kiss the bride at a wedding reception and have a drink with strangers in a bar. I just cannot become or allow myself to be so afraid of being around other people ... and I think "social distancing" is just another way to keep the level of irrational fear at a fever pitch and is as anti-social and as infective in "protecting against the flu" as those ridiculous masks.

I'm 67, have hypertension, predibatic, type A blood, vitamin D deficient, and have a brother who is a transplant patient and a sister who is a 3 year cancer survivor. I'll be wearing a mask for the foreseeable future.

Or seeing TV reporters outside on a story wearing them. WHY? To protect the mic?

“Do you recommend a good sauce?”

No. Go with one you don’t like. That way you won’t associate it with the armadillo.

Andrew Zimmern tried armadillo. He didn’t like it.

Up here one young lady got a very serious lung infection from wearing masks at work. It’ll be interesting to see the lawsuits start.

Properly fitted M-95 masks are effective, but makeshift cloth masks are little more than protection against the chunks if you sneeze. Wearing masks outdoors is just plain silly and unnecessary. My employer requires masks and issued what we refer to as black jock straps. Many of the employees especially the younger ones wear the mask with their nose exposed or as a band between their nose and mouth...totally ineffective for anything. The masks are supposed to be washed after every shift. I seriously doubt that is happening. I actually saw one gentleman using a piece of paper towel fixed to his face with paper clips in his beard. I regard wearing masks outside of a medical setting as little more than the 21st century version of magic amulets and juju beads.

Then they go home and update their Facebook pic to show them in their dumb mask because Facebook is home to the dumbest people on the planet.

“”kiss the bride at a wedding reception and have a drink with strangers in a bar.””

Just don’t kiss strangers in a bar!

It’s also dehumanizing. I haven’t worn a mask except my doc’s office where required to appease the fears of Fearpers/Karens.
I love it when the self-righteous actors prance up to the mic masked up & oh so sincere then immediately remove the mask to speak...
Letting fly with spittle. How absolutely stupid. Or not keeping the nose covered.
Useful idiots think they’re saving the world.

Anything short of an N95 is just theater. I wear one in stores to accommodate the mental health needs of the snowflakes.

This is so true. I'm going to start referring to them as theater masks or costume masks.

Might have to find the sad face / funny face masks you so often see when referencing theater.

Because I see government officials being hypocrites about the masks and taking them on and off in the summer heat. If you really believe that you are in toxic air, you keep the mask on with full coverage of the face the entire time, like I did when working in moldy environments, I kept the mask on all the way over my face, and only took it off once I left the danger zone into the open outdoor air to get my drinks and prevent dehydration. When people see hypocrisy, they lose respect for your claims because your actions show full well that you don’t believe in it.

That is what a person told me. His masks are rather complicated, not a true mask.
