George Orwell's "1984" and doublethink

Posted on 06/09/2020 11:27:56 AM PDT by gspurlock

I just did a quick search on the term "doublethink" and it turns out that, for some surprising reason, George Orwell's "1984" is a best seller again.

I seem to recall that in the book, it said that the purpose of doublethink was that if a person held two conflicting thoughts or beliefs, that it rendered the person unable to make a decision or take an action on that topic because of the simultaneous contradicting information.

It was purposeful to keep the population mentally docile and to prevent rebellion.

Yet, when I looked up the term and read several articles on it, I did not see any mention of that principle. Before reading the book again, I wanted to check to see if anyone else has this recollection.

There is also the possibility that it was simply my idea or conclusion while reading the book.

Thoughts or recollections anyone?

My recollection of this is that it was a crutch to help people get over the hurdle that logic percents.

That is, it allows you to believe some thing that logic tells you is wrong because reality tells you that, but the state has a reason for you to believe fully That something that is illogical or contradictory to your senses it’s true… Because the state wants you to believe it is true for whatever reason they have.

And in an odd way, you are right… It is to prevent rebellion.

Remember… The state doesn’t want you to just be able to say something with the truth clearly it’s not… They want you to believe it in your brain.

That is,They want to prevent you from engaging in CrimeThink which would be a form of rebellion.

The key is... You must believe.

Sigh… Damn spellcheck. What I was trying to say is:

“the state doesn’t want you to just be able to say something is the truth when clearly it is not the truth… They have to find a way to make you believe and feel that it is the truth.

like Slavery IS freedom...

freedom from having to make decisions
freedom from worrying about where your next meal is coming from
freedom from the hassles of oppressing others.

Freedom is the ability to say 2+2 =5.

Thanks. Right, my thought is that actually believing two contradictory thoughts would have the effect of rendering a person unable to think and render them inactive. It’s sort of like when a computer has a “does not compute” error, it stops, it freezes. . .

It’s like a way to actually turn the analytic component of the mind off as an actual psychological/mental mechanism. But I thought that idea was actually in the book. It looks like it was not.

As you can probably tell, this is an important topic for me. Orwell’s 1984 was supposed to be a cautionary tale, not an instructional manual as the Left seems to feel.

jmacusa is correct...that is a form of doublethink. See, O’Brien did not want Winston to just SAY 2+2=5...he wanted him to BELIEVE 2+2=5.

Just saying it to make the torture stop was not enough.

And then, after years of work and toil by the State to make Winston the perfect citizen, to be pliant and believe EVERYTHING unquestioningly, THEN they will allow him to die and victory will be theirs.

In Orwell’s 1984 (And Modern America’s Left) There will be no last minute (before the bullet hits the back of your brain tissue) shouts of “I WILL DIE A FREE MAN!” or “BIG BROTHER SUCKS DONKEY C**K!” which would be a loss for the state. Everyone must die a perfect citizen.

Orwell defines doublethink as, To know and to not know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic, to repudiate morality while laying claim to it, to believe that democracy is impossible and that the Party was the guardian of democracy. To forget, whatever it was necessary to forget, then to draw it back into memory again at the moment when it was needed, and then promptly to forget it again, and above all, to apply the same process to the process itself.

Hold back This Day....

Similar to 1984 and Animal Farm but this book is about the erasure of the White race. Hold Back This Day is a story about the white race teetering on the brink of extinction has never been written, at least none that I’ve ever heard of. Ward Kendall does pretty well with the concept, considering how un-PC his subject matter is. Jeff Huxton, the main character,is well-drawn and interesting, a White man desparately trying to accept a world of so-called “racial harmony” when all around him he sees nothing of the kind. Almost everyone else is a hodge-podge of inter-racial breeding, a kind of tan everyman, programmed by a century of government brainwashing to deny that whites had ever done any good in the world. Jeff believes it too, up until he finds evidence that proves otherwise. From there on, he’s a troubled man in a very ugly and unpleasant world, a world full of historical half-truths purposely intended to destroy any last shred of racial pride among whites.

It is a disturbing concept, not because there exists a population of darker complexioned people due to racial co-mingling which is no big deal and would happen over time no matter what (Except for racists, of course)

What is disturbing is the deliberate transference of racism based dominance to a different group by another who supposedly will revel in being the “one on top” instead of underneath.

It presupposes that there is racism that exists...and it does. However, even after Obama’s years of work to inflame racial differences, the USA is still one of the most diverse and least racist countries in the world. But there are still racists. Black people are even racist towards other black people who have more or less melanin content in their skin. Darker ones are stupid, lighter ones are untrustworthy, etc.

Just like wealth in which one person has more money/possessions/bling than another person, so the person with more is demonized by the person with less, there will always be humans who think one person is more or less capable or intelligent in some way because their skin has a different hue and will demonize the other.

It is as old as Cain and Abel, where Cain was jealous of the attention God paid to Abel but not him. Attention, belongings, money...skin color, you name it.

Many (not all) of the people crying out for racial justice don’t want justice. They want revenge for perceived injustice. They want to be the “Top Dog”. And many of them are virulent racists.

There actually exists a school of thought that blacks cannot be labeled as racist. Not kidding. There really are people, people with high positions and lots of money who subscribe to this absurd notion.
