The Minneapolis City Council president will vote to abolish the city's police department for a "transformative new model of public safety."
On Thursday, Lisa Bender, the Minneapolis City Council president, committed to abolishing law enforcement in the city, which is home to approximately 430,000 residents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
"Yes. We are going to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department and replace it with a transformative new model of public safety," Bender said in response to Jeremiah Ellison, the son of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison and another member of the city council.

In an interview with local media, Bender said she believes it is possible for the council to vote to abolish the police department, though it would require "white people" to "show up in a different way."
“To do this kind of big work, we need a deeper, broader conversation than we’ve ever had before,” she said. “We need white people, like me and my neighbors, to show up in a different way.”

If I was a resident of Minneapolis, I would be seriously considering an exit strategy, especially if I didn’t belong to a protected class.

Yep. A liberal friend of mine lives in MN and is freaking out. NOW she wants a gun and suddenly, I am the one she is calling for advice. She is having anxiety and heart palpitations, unable to sleep as she is worried about rioting getting to he neighborhood and there is NOTHING she can do.

I was thinking along the lines of what David Kopel discusses in his book “The Samurai, The Mountie, and The Cowboy” and there is a chapter titled “Civilization and Savagery: America’s Half Remembered Past”. In that chapter, he outlines how Americans kept the peace by being armed and confronting dangerous and disruptive persons before there were sheriffs or police departments. He says “the real historical meaning of vigilantism had nothing to do with individual self-defense against crime. Vigilantism meant organized, community effort to rid a locality of lawbreakers”.
And that I can perhaps add to my initial observation as well. Is this woman wishing to have groups or communities of the law abiding take up arms and do that work in the police’s stead?
If the new "transformative new model of public safety does not have the power to remove unsafe players, then the result will be vigilantism, or even worse the unsafe players will form gangs and seize control. Hope you enjoy that Minnesota.

We must have the same friend with the heart palpitations. Suddenly Minnesota nice has just been taken advantage of and shes scared to death. Hey, nice dont cut it when you are facing a mob carrying bricks and burning bottles of gasoline.
IF this passes today, I hope each police officer calls in sick. Better yet every police officer in this country should call in sick.
One amusing thing is the liberals who have always wanted more gun laws and now complain that it's faster and easier to get a handgun illegally than legally. Our seven day waiting periods are a big deal when the riots, looting, and arson are coming on all seven days.

The councils, or soviets, were organizations instituted by the Bolsheviks during the 1917 revolution to institute communist rule, replacing existing government and policing functions. History does not necessarily repeat itself but often rhymes
