The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you wont be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
We were overrun a couple of years ago, chipmunks, piggish fox squirrels and outside mice. Our termite pest guy told us about the 10 gallon bucket. In a few weeks we had eliminated 4 or 5 dozen squirrels, chipmunks and mice. I actually kept count. Get a 10 gallon bucket and fill it halfway with water. Buy a 4 or 5 pound bag of striped sunflower seeds. Have to be striped - they will float. Put enough in the bucket to have a layer on the surface. Should last 4 or 5 days without replacing. Buy a cheap pair of tongs at the dollar store. Set the bucket next to a tree, or somewhere the vermin can crawl up and see into the bucket. We put our next to our firewood. Use the tongs to fish out the carcasses. We fished out 1 or 2 each day. Had a little trouble with a raccoon tipping it over one night but we laid a heavy metal grate across the top of the bucket. Worked great.
Tonotw is scary. The antifa and anarchists are in the crowd with gas cans and spray bottles to try and light us on fire.
Having had the agle of death pass me by with a molotov cocktail a few years ago...which the fuse extinguished mid air then smashed on the pavement next to my foot and threw gasoline all over my shoe and pants....not really looking forward to being lit on fire.
I do some slow and deliberate practice on how to systematically get my gear off.
Promised my partner I wouldn’t run around of ai caught fire but would stand still so he could extinguish me.
Praying for calm.....both external and internal.
Lift me up my fellow freeper gardeners.
Prayers up.
Thank you!
It went well....no injuries that I know if.
“God and gardening work in mysterious ways.”
Amen! :)
Fantastic! But, stay vigilant! ;)
“I think I’m wasting my time trying to grow anything!”
So sorry to hear of your gardening woes. My suggestion is to find a book specific to growing in your area, and use the varieties they recommend, planting dates, critter and bug control suggestions, etc.
You’ll be amazed what a huge difference that will make! Maybe not This year, but in the future. :)
Post to me here, or message me as to where you live (Example: SW corner of Wisconsin) and I’ll see what books/authors I can find to recommend. (I’ve read them all!)
yep we had heavy rains last night so more garlic powder today.I am going to try your pickle recipe just a smaller jar.
I don’t know how much this helps, but, Duluth Trading Company makes these Fire Hose Pants that hold up incredibly well to cutting and stabbing, and take long enough to burn that there have been several stories of people who accidentally dumped flammable liquids on themselves, caught fire, and did not have any burn marks where the fire hose pants covered them.
It might be worth checking to see if you can wear those as part of your riot gear.
Glad to hear that!
We’ve got the National Guard in my town. I’m very thankful for that. Husband is picking up some eggs and milk before they burn down all the grocery stores...
AI thank you for the tip. Yes we have gone through many searches for clothing that will lessen or eliminate the threat of being burned up by the and/or kiss. However almost every article of clothing that has strong anti flammable structure it’s not suitable for wearing for long periods of time like we have to do during these protests you’re talking 12 and 18 hours of marching around and the fire retardant properties do not last. We even looked for the spray on fire retardant but you’re not supposed to get it on your skin. And the stuff that you can spray on and not her you when it touches your skin turns your clothing white like you are a glazed donut.
We settled on these really nice and small enough to carry around fire extinguishers called cold fireWhich are a great product
That’s very kind of you! We’re in the Upstate of SC, basically north west part of the state. We’ve had luck with some crops in the past but over the last 2 or 3 years, we’ve been overrun with either chippy or squash worms! Also this spring we have had rain at least 3 days a week & I mean flooding rain!! This week is our first of sun more than 2 days in a row!! Thanks again for your offer of help!!
Just in case you’re confused - my pickle recipe won’t repel critters, LOL! (j/k) :)
No it’s just that I am done doing kosher whole pickles after decades! I actually tried a big jar of kimchee a few years ago, made it mild tasting but still didn’t like it, the compost bin can always use material . LOL
So, I’m thinking Zone 7 is your growing zone - lucky you!

Critter issues have been discussed here a LOT! Homemade repellents or purchased ones, ‘Critter Ridder’ or ‘Repels All’ have given me good results. I’m not over run but I have Chippy and Raccoon issues.
I’ve been having one of our hunting dogs sleep on the front porch this week. I was closing up the kitchen for the night and the porch light came on and a BRAZEN raccoon was looking at me through the kitchen storm door! I’m guessing it was the same one that disassembled my porch pot the other night and stole one of my ceramic mushrooms, LOL!
I have gardened through too much rain and drought conditions. I will take a drought over too much rain any day! I have a well, so watering during drought is a PITA, but I’ve never had better tomatoes and peppers than in dry years.
Book recommendations in next post.
You’re Welcome! Don’t ever hesitate to ask us if you need help.
I retired four years ago. Loving it!
