Special Dispatch to the New-York Times. CHICAGO, Tuesday, May 15. A great crowd of people arrived to-day by the morning and evening trains. The various delegations are full, and are busy arranging their committee-men and officers. The city is thronged with strangers from all sections of the country, who expect by outside pressure to influence the action of the Convention. Probably no former Convention was so utterly "at sea" the day before organization as this one seems to be. The friends of each candidate press their choice with persistency and energy.

In 1860 Chicago was a city of about 100,000 people.
The NY Times tells us there were not less than 40,000 "strangers" visiting for the Republican convention.
In 2016 the total numbers travelling to Cleveland for the Republican convention was estimated at 48,000 though, of course, many millions watched on TV.
The Cleveland combined metropolitan area has around 3.5 million people.
In 1860 the nation had to wait for the next day's newspapers. ;-)
