In 1860 Chicago was a city of about 100,000 people.
The NY Times tells us there were not less than 40,000 "strangers" visiting for the Republican convention.

In 2016 the total numbers travelling to Cleveland for the Republican convention was estimated at 48,000 though, of course, many millions watched on TV.
The Cleveland combined metropolitan area has around 3.5 million people.

In 1860 the nation had to wait for the next day's newspapers. ;-)
