National Geographic today released never-before-seen footage from within ancient Egypt's first known fully intact funeral home. In conjunction with Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, a team of archaeologists led by Dr. Ramadan Hussein from Germany's Eberhard Karls University of Tuebingen, uncovered the burial complex, dating back to 600 BC, deep beneath the sands at the Saqqara necropolis less than an hour's drive south of Cairo. The new, four-part series KINGDOM OF THE MUMMIES produced for National Geographic by BBC Studios follows the team as they explore the subterranean chambers and open four sealed, 2,600 year-old sarcophagi to unlock secrets forgotten since the age of the Pharaohs.

Premiering Tuesday May 12 at 10/9c on National Geographic in the US before rolling out globally in 142 countries and 43 languages, KINGDOM OF THE MUMMIES tracks Dr. Hussein's team, along with Egyptologist Prof. Salima Ikram from American University in Cairo, mummy expert Dr. Stephen Buckley from University of York, digital archaeologist Dr. Matthias Lang from University of Tuebingen, geoengineer Dr. Ayman Hamed of Suez University and paleoradiologist Prof. Sahar Saleem from Cairo University, as they make a host of new finds and decipher clues about Egyptian burial processes...

The first gilded silver mummy mask in Egypt since 1939. Only the third such mask to ever be found in Egypt, the exquisite craftsmanship and advanced metalworking technique that involves plating worked silver with a fine layer of gold, represented one step on the journey of the transformation of the dead into a god. In ancient Egypt silver was double the value of gold and non-invasive testing determined the silver's purity at 99.07%, higher even than Sterling Silver at 92.5% ...

My friend in Cairo showed me a sketch that looked like an eel, but he did not tell me the origin of the sketch. I found a reference to ancient Eyptianb tomb markings similar.

Electric catfish, Malapterurus electricus

https://www.scotcat.com/factsheets/malapterurus_electricus.htm

“This is certainly a catfish for the experienced catfish keeper as it is like no other, and when adult the electric organ is capable of generating 300-400 volts, enough to stun a full grown adult of Homo sapian!. When they are bought, usually as small juveniles, their electrical output is more of a tingle.”

“This is an old world catfish and it is reputed that Doctors in ancient Egypt used shocks from the Electric Catfish to reduce the pain of arthritis. This trait is still used today in some areas. It also has the earliest reference of them as hieroglyphics on the walls of ancient Egyptian tombs dating back some 5000 years.”

Here is a reference of his comments from twitter related to this.

This is not the info he sent me that referenced electric eels. That may have been from a direct message. I looked at that, he has removed all but the most recent of those.

It does show a mummified fish that he says was an electric fish.

He is an interesting guy. Knows a lot about the Middle East.

You can get the basic mummy for 3 tons of barley, but for 4 tons, you can upgrade to our “Scorpion King” package...

My question, too. Is there a plating process other than electroplating? All the way back in the days of the Exodus, things were PLATED or OVERLAID with gold or other metals. But that was just working a layer of the metal on to a wooden or other substrate using hammers and other instruments. That was not plating as we know it.

It’ll look better after the conservators get it cleaned up.
