GALLUP, N.M.
Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has authorized the lockdown of Gallup at the mayors request.
The governor will invoke the states Riot Control Act, which will authorize her to enact further temporary restrictions to stop the spread of COVID-19 in that city.
The order goes into effect on Friday at 12 p.m. and will expire on Monday at noon.
The lock-down will order all roads into Gallup be closed, businesses in the city will close from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. and vehicles can have a max of two individuals. Residents are ordered to remain in their residence except for emergency outings for essential healthy, safety and welfare.
I recognize this request is unusual and constitutes a drastic measure, and the emergency powers set out under the Riot Control Act should be invoked sparingly, said Mayor Louis Bonaguidi. However, the COVID-19 outbreak in the city of Gallup is a crisis of the highest order. Immediate action is necessary.
The spread of this virus in McKinley County is frightful, said Gov. Lujan Grisham, and it shows that physical distancing has not occurred and is not occurring. The virus is running amok there. It must be stopped, and stricter measures are necessary. A problem in one part of our state, with a virus this dangerous and this contagious, is a problem for our entire state. The imperative for all of us to remain home and physically distant has not changed. It is even more crucial for New Mexicans in the northwestern region. But what is happening in the northwest could happen in any part of our state. We must remain vigilant.
As of Thursday, McKinley County had 1,027 reported cases of COVID-19. That is more than 30% of the state's total positive cases.
Just read another article here on FR. Apparently the death rate is very high. The article was about a family of three dying from China flu in that county.
I dont know anything about reservations. Do the kids take off as soon as they are out of school...like they did in rural VT?
Thanks for the heads up CedarDave.
If Wikipedia is right the population of Gallup New Mexico is 21,678... seems odd. Then again NM’s Governor would need 60 IQ points to reach ‘retarded’.
County:
73% Native American
14% Hispanic
Thought it was Type A and B that had more problems.
Just read the tweets from @GovMLG, her edicts and comments are entertaining.
That was my first thought also
Riot Control Act? Unless it is misnamed, sounds like a misapplication of an act
My wife did (the Crow Agency). All of her siblings did. Most people do not want to stay.
i can’t remember which blood type it was, but there was one that was shown to be more vulnerable to covid.
I remember it was a type more common in whites.
So it’s not outrageous to think one race might be more vulnerable than another, though the effect might not be huge
The Optics of the first real martial law restriction being in a town of Native Americans has got to be the worst thing imaginable.
Roundup every horse, get painted, and charge the roadblock. But make sure the media is there. There is not a politician in American that could recover from that.
THIS came from the Chinese.
My county has about 37,000 cases and about twice the number of cases per capita. Our roads aren't blocked.
LOL...I think you have a Top 40 hit on your hands!
When Reagan’s sec interior said “”If you want an example of the failure of socialism, don’t go to Russia, come to America and go to the Indian reservations.” they should have backed him and demanded change, instead they vilified him.
The number of cases is actually irrelevant. Just like the seasonal flu the main concern is just severe cases that require hospitalization, all such cases that resulted in death. But most people who get the flu do not tax the resources of the health care system and neither do most (80%, 90% or more) cases of the Wuhan Virus.
So as far as Gallup, NM goes, the data points that are relevant are not how many or where are the cases, generally, but from where in Gallop did the severe cases and the deaths come from. If like many U.S. counties, those numbers come from (a) eldercare facilities, and (b) elders with a number of comorbidity factors. Therefor, “social distancing” for the general population is not the factor from which the most severe cases and deaths arise. They come from a couple of population categories that should be either institutionally sheltered or individually sheltering, and that is not most of the general population.
Dude your movies are amazing - watching Django Unchained and its a peach! Bravo. Welcome to FR
Because for people on EBT and SSI, not being able to go to the grocery store on the first weekend the month would never present a problem. //sarc
Theyre so close up provoking violence its scary.
__________
That seems to be what some are trying to do
“Do the kids take off as soon as they are out of school...like they did in rural VT?”
Well, my wife got off about 300 yards from the reservation.
BUT, it’s Ruidoso. And one of the most beautiful spots in the world.
AND, she served in the US Army and is a medical doctor.
Great place to live, if you do something other than work at the ski lodge or the casino.
