GALLUP, N.M.
Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has authorized the lockdown of Gallup at the mayors request.
The governor will invoke the states Riot Control Act, which will authorize her to enact further temporary restrictions to stop the spread of COVID-19 in that city.
The order goes into effect on Friday at 12 p.m. and will expire on Monday at noon.
The lock-down will order all roads into Gallup be closed, businesses in the city will close from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. and vehicles can have a max of two individuals. Residents are ordered to remain in their residence except for emergency outings for essential healthy, safety and welfare.
I recognize this request is unusual and constitutes a drastic measure, and the emergency powers set out under the Riot Control Act should be invoked sparingly, said Mayor Louis Bonaguidi. However, the COVID-19 outbreak in the city of Gallup is a crisis of the highest order. Immediate action is necessary.
The spread of this virus in McKinley County is frightful, said Gov. Lujan Grisham, and it shows that physical distancing has not occurred and is not occurring. The virus is running amok there. It must be stopped, and stricter measures are necessary. A problem in one part of our state, with a virus this dangerous and this contagious, is a problem for our entire state. The imperative for all of us to remain home and physically distant has not changed. It is even more crucial for New Mexicans in the northwestern region. But what is happening in the northwest could happen in any part of our state. We must remain vigilant.
As of Thursday, McKinley County had 1,027 reported cases of COVID-19. That is more than 30% of the state's total positive cases.

So, an overhyped virus is the equivalent of rioting? Wow.
Gallup has a high native american population, which seems to be vulnerable to covid.
The well-known COVID-19 exception to the US Constitution.
Not getting kicks on route 66 anymore.
Why is it so bad in this one county?!
Its becoming very obvious why the left wants to disarm the population.
Lasthe I knew alcohol was killing more Gallup residents than WuFlu.
They never locked down Gallup over alcohol abuse.
“As of Thursday, McKinley County had 1,027 reported cases of COVID-19.”
Roughly 1 in 70 people in that county are infected. Roughly 1 in 50 in NYC.
So why the martial law in Gallup?
Closure
NMDOT has mobilized roadblocks on both east and westbound off ramps of I-40, Exit 20 (Munoz Drive). Traffic will be restricted into Gallup in order to stop the spread of COVID-19 in the area. State Police and the Army National Guard will be manning all checkpoints. Motorists should expect to stop at this location. Signs will be posted warning drivers of checkpoints ahead.

” The racial makeup of the city was 35.2% White, 43.8% Native American, 2.0% Asian, 1.2% African American, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 12.0% from other races, and 5.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 31.7% of the population.”
Mostly the native Americans impacted with the rona?
I don’t live there but I would be in my car headed to the roadblock and it’s highly likely you would read about me in the paper the following day.
“Kicks on I-40” just doesn’t have the same ring.
So what the frick is three MFing days supposed to accomplish?
White man have terrible record of interaction with Indians.
It was around 1976 when i drove through downtown Gallup and there were 6 straight blocks of down-trodden individuals sitting on the sidewalk with a brown paper bag of something in their lap. Super sad. Hope its gotten better.
So many elderly alone, far from family, Life is already hard and now this, what for some must be simple terror. Gallup is in Indian Country, hard for the tribes to be away from each other. Weekend in Gallup is always busy time. It will look like an empty Spirit World this Saturday and Sunday.
